“Merlin, can I have the tie that you borrowed last week . . .” Arthur said as he walked into Merlin’s room. He stopped and stared at the chaos in front of him. “What happened in here?”

“I’m looking for my lucky socks,” Merlin said. Normally his room was a little messy, but he usually picked up before it got too bad. But in its current state, it looked as if a bomb had gone off.

“And why, pray tell, do you need your lucky socks?”

“Today’s the day I’m planning on asking Morgana to marry me.”

“You think you need lucky socks in order to pop the question?” Arthur frowned. “Merlin, you two have been nuts about each other from the moment you met. I don’t think you’re going to need lucky anything. She’s going to say ‘yes’, mate.”

Merlin paused in his tossing of clothing and looked up at Arthur. “I know. It’s just that I’m so incredibly nervous. I thought the lucky socks would help.”

Arthur sat on the corner of Merlin’s bed not covered in stuff. “Merlin, take a few deep breaths. You don’t need the lucky socks. You never did. You have the ring, yes?” Merlin nodded over at his dresser, where the ring box sat. “Good. Now pull yourself together. This is going to work. Now, get up and go get your girl!”

Merlin stood. “Thanks, Arthur. I’m going to ask her to marry me. This will work!” He grabbed the ring box and his keys then headed for the door of the flat.”

“Um, Merlin, you might want to put on some pants first.”

Arthur had to hold back a laugh as Merlin halted, turned and returned to his room. He rummaged around through his pile of clothes, finally finding an acceptable pair of pants, and put them on. As he made to leave the room again, Arthur stopped him.

“Merlin?”

“Hmm?”

“My tie?”

“Oh, yes.” Merlin rummaged around a bit more and came up with Arthur’s tie almost right off. “Thanks, Arthur.”

“For the tie?”

“No, for pointing out that I can do this.”

“You’re welcome. Now, go.”

“Yup, I’m leaving.”

Once the front door closed behind Merlin, Arthur indulged himself in a good, hearty laugh. Life with Merlin was never boring.
