Arthur hated these ceremonies, always had. Since his father pulled back more and more out of the ‘King business’ as he called it and left those duties to him, he just couldn’t find reasons to not attend. He knew it wouldn’t be fair if the knights who had served Camelot and now retired didn’t get recognized. Or did, but by someone lesser than the king himself…or in this case, the king to be. And yet, he found it utterly boring to read the almost same speech every time and handed the man in front of him a scroll that confirmed that he had been under his command and to wish him the best for the future.

His thoughts were with the new knights - with another tedious ceremony ahead of him to knight them - as he said good-bye to the five men in front of him, hoping he found the right words of thanks and encouragement for the new chapter of their lives.

And hadn’t Merlin said there was yet another ceremony this week for…some flower crown competition? Or was that the baking one that decided who would become the new head baker in the kitchens of the citadel? Arthur didn’t know, there were too many of them for the most stupid reasons.

Merlin seemed to enjoy those events. He stood in the background, grinning widely and applauding each of the men. That was probably because Merlin was friends with everyone in the entire castle. Or simply because there was a fare-well feast once they were finished with the official part and he got all the good left-overs. Arthur didn’t know.

When he finally made it to his chambers late in the evening, Arthur took a deep breath as he sat at the edge of his bed, trying to take his boots off.

“Here, let me help you.”

“Oh, there you are. For once helpful.”

Merlin grinned. “You know what? I think I should light the candles first. Maybe then you’ll be able to find your feet.”

Opening the fastening of his cloak, Arthur scrambled around to toss it over the back of a chair. “One of my feet might find its way to your behind a bit easier then, too.”

He smiled as Merlin once again gave a witty remark, just on the verge of being disrespectful and always teasing. Getting him undressed at night was like a ceremony, too. It had rules and the always same process and since Merlin had shown up and took every chance to banter, Arthur had begun to enjoy it.
