Author's Notes: Canon AU. Why didn't Morgause scry regularly to follow the goings-on in Camelot? Imagine what she might have found out! That's a plothole I've wanted to fill.
With Open Eyes
Morgana leans across the plinth, looking into the depths of its large jagged crystal with a frown. "I cannot see anything but disjointed flashes and random images," she tells Morgause.
"Do not fret, sister," Morgause replies. "Scrying is a talent that very few possess. Otherwise, your magic has grown strong, and your skills are improving day by day."
"I wanted to see Merlin," Morgana mutters.
Morgause makes a dismissive gesture. "There's no need. He'll be there as always, following Arthur around like a puppy."
Morgana's face contorts with rage. Her eyes glow so fiercely that they seem red. "Seeing my poisoner would strengthen my resolve."
"Very well," Morgause shrugs. "Take my hand and close your eyes. I will scry, and you shall see what I see."
The two women compose themselves, Morgause muttering the proper incantation. "Show us Merlin."
There are several blinding flashes, as if the crystal protests the command. But the image clears. They see Merlin. He looks no different from before, his clothes the same, his guileless face pensive. He is in Arthur's chambers, tending to the prince's long cloak, which lies draped across the table, the cloth muddy and torn.
Morgana squeezes her sister's hand so hard that it hurts. A feral sound like a cat's hiss escapes her.
"Does this suffice?" Morgause asks. Before Morgana can reply, the crystal's mundane scene changes into something so extraordinary, so unexpected, that both women gasp. Merlin seems to be speaking, although he's alone in the room. His eyes suddenly glow brightly, and as his hand slides along the red cloak, it cleans and repairs itself. In a moment, the garment looks good as new. The fire in Merlin's eyes is extinguished. He gathers the cloak in his arms, and turns towards the antechamber.
Morgause severs the connection. She steps back, her eyes meeting Morgana's.
"Merlin is a sorcerer," Morgana whispers, aghast. "I had no idea."
"Neither did I. But why would someone that powerful be posing for years as Arthur's manservant? What is his plan?"
Shaking her head, Morgana bites her lip. "I do not know. Is he biding his time, waiting for the right moment to strike? Does he plan to rule Camelot with Arthur as his puppet, manipulating him with magic?"
"Whatever he plans, Morgana, he's still our enemy. He clearly doesn't want to share power. Why else would he keep his abilities secret from you, when you most needed help? Why else did he try to kill you? He was obviously getting rid of a magical rival."
Morgana's expression hardens. Her eyes narrow. "You are right. Merlin is every bit as formidable an enemy as Uther. I can hardly say which one of them I hate more."
Morgause smiles approvingly. "We must make new plans."
"His schemes will come to naught, and he will fall," Morgana states. "Now our eyes have been opened. I will have Camelot, and I will have vengeance. It won't be pretty. Merlin gave me hemlock. I'll repay him with mayhem."
