“Merlin, come over here and wipe up this spill,” Arthur said.
Merlin didn’t pause in his gathering of Arthur’s laundry.
“Merlin, wipe up this spill.”
Merlin still acted like he hadn’t heard Arthur, who was tapped his fingers on the table.
“Merlin!” Arthur got up from the table and walked over to Merlin, turning him around roughly. “Is your mind absent today?”
Merlin’s head hung down, and as Arthur looked closer, he saw tears running down his face. “Merlin,” he said, “what’s wrong?”
Merlin wiped his eyes and looked at Arthur. “It’s Gaius. He’s seriously ill and I couldn’t find anyone to stay with him.”
“Merlin, why didn’t you tell me this earlier?”
“You were in a bad mood when I woke you and I thought you’d just snap at me.”
“I’m sorry I gave you that impression. If Gaius is ill, we must see to him immediately,” Arthur said.
“Thank you, Arthur. Wait, did you just say we?”
“I did.” Arthur began to walk toward the doors. “Let’s go.”
“I really appreciate this, Arthur.”
“Oh, I’ll get it out of you sooner or later, don’t worry.”
“And I thought you were being nice.”
“Don’t let that get around.”
Merlin grinned. “Don’t worry, I won’t.”
