Morgana woke from a dream to find an empty spot beside her. She looked around the room until she found him, standing at the window. A full moon shone on his pale skin, and he fairly glowed.
She got up from the bed and walked over to him and put a hand on his shoulder. “What’s going on in your head, Merlin?”
He put a hand on hers and turned to her. “Have you thought about the future much, Morgana? About what we’re leaving behind for Ellie?”
“I have, a little.”
“It’s just that the world is a scary place right now, and what if we never make it through all this? What if it never goes away?”
Morgana put her other hand on his cheek. “That’s what’s got you up tonight?” He nodded. “Merlin, there’s always going to be something out there angling to ruin our lives. The best thing we can do is to make sure Ellie is prepared to face the future. We have to teach her. That’s the best way to conquer your fear, Merlin.”
Merlin put his free hand to her face. “Thank you, Morgana. That helps a lot.”
“Shall we go back to bed then?”
Merlin smiled. “Of course.” He led her back to the bed where they both laid down. Merlin curled himself around Morgana and they fell asleep like that, free of worries for a time.
