Morgana sat in the car and waited to get up the courage to leave. She hated hospitals, had done so ever since the nightmares and her treatment for them began. They felt too cold and too sterile to her, and so many painful tests had clouded her perception of doctors forever, but she saw their use and dealt with her fear.

The main entrance was directly in her line of sight, but she didn’t really take in any of the goings on. That is, until a familiar face caught her eye.

Elaine had interviewed her only a little more than a week ago for a piece she was writing on a high profile human rights case. She was beautiful; blue eyes, reddish brown hair, and the kindest face Morgana had seen. Morgana had asked for her number straight after the interview and they’d already been out together twice.

And there she was, leaning on a man who looked suspiciously like the facebook pictures of the man Merlin was currently head over heels about. Her head leant into his chest, they wore matching smiles, and her hand rested on her stomach with alarming fondness. Morgana watched with horror as she rubbed it a little, then lifted herself up on her tiptoes to kiss his cheek.

She didn’t stay for her appointment. Just drove straight home to tell Merlin.

Five hours later, curled up under a duvet with ice cream and Doctor Who, Morgana’s phone buzzed. Merlin was nearer to the coffee table, so he braved the lean over to look at the display.

“It’s Elaine.”

“Not replying.”

“Hi Morgana, are you stuck in traffic or something? Xxx” he read.

“I’m still not replying, Merlin.”

“Not even something witty and cutting and cruel?”

Morgana turned away from the television screen to face him, slowly.

“Really? And you can think of a witty and cutting and cruel response to just finding out that your date is so serious about seeing someone else that she’s having a baby with him? Because she was really just with you to get some scoop for her story?”

Merlin sighed and took another spoonful of ice cream.

“I suppose you’re right.”

Ten minutes later another text came through. Another two minutes after that.

After another five minutes there was a phone call. Morgana let it ring on to answerphone.

Morgana, I’m really worried now. Please pick up, or text or whatever, I just need to know you’re safe. If you want to reschedule that’s fine, but I’m really worried honey. Hopefully you’re on your way now, so see you soon!

The texts continued after that for regular intervals, then after an hour there was another message.

Shit, Morgana, answer the phone. Please, please hear this. Don’t be lying dead in a ditch somewhere or- or- please Morgana, pick up…

After that the sounds degraded into sobs and gasps of air, and Elaine hung off. Morgana stared at the phone until the next message, two minutes later.

I just need to know you’re safe. If you don’t want to see me again then that’s fine- well it’s not, but I can get over that- I just can’t- you can’t be dead, or hurt, or unconscious or or or- or your phone could have been stolen but then why wouldn’t you come? Pick up the phone, call me back, please, quickly!

Half way through the message Morgana had buried her head in the cushions of the sofa. Merlin watched her as she slowly sat back up again.

“I think you should call her.”

“You would. But you haven’t seen her. She’s good, she’s the best. Merlin, she could convince anyone of anything.”

They fell silent after that, Merlin glancing over at Morgana disbelievingly for the twenty minutes it took the phone to ring again. This time there was no message, just an instant call back, over and over again, for another half an hour.

On the last phone call Elaine left a message.

Lance is taking me to your flat. Hopefully something’s just happened to your phone. But I will be there, if you’re bleeding out on the floor or something, Morgana, I am coming.

Merlin sat a little more upright at the name Lance.

“Call her back.”

Morgana shook her head.

Five minutes later the knock came on the door, accompanied by a low voice.

“If anyone’s in there, open the door. Or I will kick it down.”

Merlin got up to open the door, and Morgana made no move to stop him.

When Elaine all but fell through the door she was in a complete state. Her hair was a mess, her eyes red and her face raw with crying. And still Morgana thought she was beautiful.

“You’re here! Oh, thank God, you’re safe!”

Morgana refused to look at her.

“Don’t try that on me.”

“What?”

“I saw you at the hospital earlier.”

Elaine moved to kneel next to Morgana, clinging to the edge of the sofa.

“Morgana, I am so sorry. I was going to tell you I’m pregnant tonight, I swear, and then you could decide if you wanted to see me again. I know it would be hard dating a single mother and I know I should have let you make your choice earlier on but I’m selfish and I had to see you-”

Morgana looked up abruptly from Lance standing in the living room doorway with his arms folded to Elaine on the floor, still in her pretty dress and her heels and her coat.

“You mean you’re not seeing him?”

It was Elaine’s turn to look up then, in shock.

“Lancelot? He’s the father but we’re not- He’s my best friend, and he’s my sperm donor.”

Morgana frowned in confusion.

“But you kissed him! And he was with you at the hospital!”

Lance sighed and walked into the room.

“I’m not abandoning her with a child, you know. I’m going to actually be the father.”

Morgana gaped, frozen, lost for words. Elaine used the opportunity to throw herself into her arms.

“Please say you still want me.”

“I- yes, of course I- Elaine, shush, come here-”

Merlin sidled up to Lance with a clean spoon and the tub of ice cream, and watched Morgana pull Elaine into her lap and hold her.

“So you’re not seeing Elaine, then?”

Lance glanced over, smiled, and shook his head.

“Would you like to be seeing me?”

His smile grew a little as he shrugged.

“I don’t see why not.”

Merlin threw himself in for a kiss in answer.
