Merlin rushed to keep up with Morgana. He followed her as she walked down the castle corridors, finally catching up with her near the stairs down to the other royal chambers.
As he grabbed her arm, she snarled, “What are you doing here?”
“Preventing you from making a big mistake,” he replied.
“And what would that be?” She struggled to free her arm but he held fast.
“Aren’t you going to . . .?”
“To what, Merlin? Didn’t you learn your lesson the last time you followed me?”
“I . . .” Merlin was struck with the realization that Morgana might not be doing what he thought she was doing.
“Short on words tonight, Merlin? I thought you always had something to say.” She finally freed her arm, but in the process, she lost her balance and tumbled backwards down the staircase.
“No!” Merlin cried, running to her, but it was too late. She’d hit her head on the way down and was unconscious. He ran as fast as he could to Arthur’s chambers to explain the situation to him, leaving out the part where he was involved in the struggle.
As Arthur carried her to Gaius, he beat himself up mentally over and over again. What could he have done differently? How badly is she hurt? Why didn’t I confront her in a different place? But the damage was done and he would just have to wait and see what came of it.
