“Merlin, I don’t think we should go on this voyage,” Morgana said as Merlin kept packing their trunks.
“Why not? It’s been a while since I’ve seen the New World and I want to see how it’s changed,” he replied.
“Because I’ve had a dream.” She sat on the bed.
Merlin walked over and took her hands. “I don’t suppose you’re talking about a regular, random dream the rest of us have?”
Morgana shook her head. “No. I saw the Titanic hit an iceberg and sink. The loss of lives . . . well, it’s horrible.” Tears welled up in her eyes.
Merlin sat down next to her and took her in his arms. “What if we went and stopped it with magic? It could work.”
She shook her head slowly. “I’m afraid not. This seems to be one of those things that has to happen. The vision is very clear.”
“Oh. So nothing we do or don’t so will stop it.”
“Right.”
“All right.” He stood. “We won’t go.”
“Thank you. I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be. There’s always another ship going to America. We’ll find one soon.”
“Of course.” Morgana went to her trunk. “Here, let me help you unpack.”
They unpacked their trunks in silence, both pondering the necessary loss of lives. It hasn’t gotten easier with the passage of time. That’s the curse of their immortal lives.
