Morgana was surprised when the door to her chambers opened and closed rapidly. She got up from her dressing table and turned to see Merlin standing there. He didn’t have his usual happy-go-lucky look about him. Instead he looked serious, and given the hour, she wasn’t surprised.
“I daren’t stay long. I just had to see you tonight,” he said, coming toward her.
“Merlin, what’s going on?”
He came up to her and took her hands. “Morgana, I’m in danger. But I wanted to see you before I left.”
“You’re leaving? But why?”
“I can’t get into that. But I wanted to tell you something.”
She put a hand to his face. “So tell me.”
“Morgana, I love you. I always have and I always will. Please take this to remember me by.” He took off his neckerchief and handed it to her. “Be safe, stay close to Arthur. He’s a good man.” A shadow passed over his face. “Be well.” He bent down and kissed her cheek then turned and walked to the door. “Farewell, Morgana.”
The door opened and closed again, but this time Morgana didn’t look. She walked to her bed and sat on it. Tears welled in her eyes. Her whole life had just been changed by a few simple words. Feelings came and went, but sadness lingered. She’d had the love of her life and lost it in the same minute. She would be forever altered by Merlin’s presence in her life.
