“Merlin, you know I can’t cook,” Morgana said as he ushered her into the kitchen.

“I know, but baking is different than cooking,” he replied, “with my help, you’ll be baking in no time.”

“I guess, as long as it isn’t too hard.”

“We’re making Christmas cookies!”

Morgana pictured the cookies she’d seen in shops. “That sounds hard.”

“Don’t worry, we’re making simple sugar cookies. They’re easy.”

“Okay, I guess that doesn’t sound too bad.”

“All we have to do is make the dough, roll it out then cut it into shapes. We can decorate them when they’re cool, if you want.”

Morgana smiled. “That sounds like fun.”

“Great. Now I’ve got to gather everything we need to make the dough.” Merlin moved around the room, collecting a bowl, mixer, and different ingredients like flour. Once he had everything gathered on the counter, he motioned Morgana over. “Let’s get started.”

“What do I have to do?”

“I’ll measure everything out and you put it in the bowl.”

“I can do that.”

Merlin gave her a quick kiss. “I know you can.”

They started with ingredients like flour and sugar then moved on to eggs and vanilla. The eggs were amazing-Morgana watched as Merlin deftly cracked them on the edge of the bowl. “I could never do that,” she said.

“I think you could do it, with practice,” Merlin replied, smiling. Once everything was in the bowl, Merlin set the mixer to mixing. They watched it work until Merlin decided it was done. “Now we roll it out on the table.” He took a measuring cup with flour and sprinkled it on the table. Then he took the bowl with the dough over and dumped it onto the flour. He came back to a drawer and pulled out a rolling pin then took it over to the table. He patted the dough down until it was kind of flat then took the rolling pin to it, rolling it smoothly over the dough.

“Can I try that?” Morgana asked.

“Sure. Come on over.” He showed her how to put her hands on the rolling pin, then stood behind her with his hands over hers to roll out the dough. Once she got the hang of it, he let go and watched. He watched her for a couple minutes, until he determined the dough was thin enough. “All right, now we cut out the cookie shapes.” He produced cookie cutters that were shaped like trees, flowers, bells, snowmen, and hearts.

“You put them down like this, and press hard.” Merlin demonstrated then handed Morgana a cookie cutter. “Now it’s your turn.”

“Like this?” Morgana tried it. The dough came up into the cookie cutter when she pulled it away.

“Yes, that’s perfectly all right. We just tap it until it comes out.” He did so, and the tree plopped back onto the table.

“This is fun!”

Merlin and Morgana cut all sorts of shapes into the dough until there wasn’t any space left. Merlin fetched the cookie sheets, and they carefully laid all the shapes down onto them. After he slid the sheet into the oven, he set the timer. “Now we just wait until they’re done. Then we’ll take them out and let them cool,” Merlin said.

They did not have to bake long, so they were soon all baked. “So do they have to cool all the way down?” Morgana asked.

“Until they are all the way cold. Otherwise the icing will melt off. We don’t want that.”

“So what will we do until they’re cool?”

“I think I have an idea.” Merlin pulled her close, bent down his head and pressed his lips to hers. She threw her arms around his neck and pulled him closer. They stayed like that for a few minutes, until Morgana forgot all about the cookies and instead pulled Merlin into the bedroom. Needless to say, the cookies got to cool all night long.
