Yule Treats
Hunith made small sacrifices all through autumn and into winter, in order to afford some proper Yule treats for Merlin. She got fine flour, butter, a pot of honey, and sweet dried fruits. Right before the big day, she made the most delicious cookies.
Merlin sat on his little stool, wrapped in a woolen blanket against the winter cold. Their small hearth fire wasn't enough to heat the cottage properly. The boy watched her intently as she worked, his face serious and reverent in the presence of the expensive and mouth-watering ingredients.
Finishing up, Hunith carefully put the honeyed treats away in a pottery jar. "We'll save them for our Yule feast. It's just a few days away."
Merlin's face fell, and she ruffled his hair. "Here you go, dearest." Smiling, she handed him the cookie she'd intended for now. "I need you to try this one, and tell me if it tastes just as it should."
It pinched Hunith's heart to watch how eagerly her scrawny little son scarfed down the Yule delicacy. Oh, how she wished she could offer him sweetmeats and rich foods more often! 'But that's just the way the cookie crumbles', she thought wryly to herself as she watched Merlin devour the last crumbs. 'We have each other, and that's what really counts.'
