Normally Lady Morgana distanced herself from the gossiping that was passed around the chamber as the ladies of the castle sat at embroidery. But this time, she thought she heard two names she was familiar with, and wanted to know what they were saying about them. So she interjected herself into the conversation with, “Is that my maid you are talking about?”
Lady Gwyneth spoke up. “It is, my lady. Guinevere is dallying with another servant.”
“And who is it she is supposedly dallying with?”
“Prince Arthur’s servant, Merlin.”
“Now that cannot be.”
“It is, my lady. They have been seen together several times.”
Morgana stood. “I shall go find out myself.” The ladies tittered behind her as she left the chamber, but Morgana ignored them. Most of them weren’t worth her time anyway.
Morgana found Gwen in her chamber, making the bed. Gwen jumped when she saw Morgana standing there. “Oh, my lady, you startled me.”
“Gwen, I heard some very interesting gossip just now. They say you are dallying with Merlin.”
Gwen blushed. “It’s not true. We are merely friends.”
“But you’d like to be more, wouldn’t you?”
“Yes.”
“But how does he feel?”
Gwen shook her head. “I don’t know, my lady.”
“I could ask him. He would have to tell me the truth.”
Gwen’s arms flew up. “No, please don’t, my lady.”
“Oh, very well. But only as a favor to you. Now, I think I shall do as Arthur sometimes suggests, and brush my hair.”
That night after Gwen had gone home, a knock sounded at her door. Right on schedule. Morgana rose and answered the door. There stood Merlin, holding her nightly bottle of potion.
“Your potion, my lady,” he said.
“Thank you, Merlin. Will you step in for a minute?”
“I don’t know if that’s a good idea.”
“It will only be a minute. I find I have some questions for you.”
“All right,” he said as he stepped inside.
Morgana shut the door behind him. “Now Merlin, I have heard some interesting gossip today. They say you are dallying with Gwen. I know that to be false. What say you?”
Merlin blushed. “It’s definitely not true. We’re only friends.”
“That is what she told me as well. Good.”
“Besides, she is not whom I like.”
Morgana’s eyes widened. “Oh, and whom do you like?”
“I dare not say.”
“Merlin, whoever she is, she is lucky to have your regard. I promise not to tell anyone.”
Merlin looked directly at her. “It is yourself, my lady.”
“Me? Why, I had no idea.”
“You wouldn’t. I have told no one that you are always in my thoughts in the day and in my dreams at night.”
“That’s very poetic, Merlin.”
“Thank you my lady. I’m afraid I have shocked you. I should go.”
“Oh Merlin, I wish I was worthy of you. Maybe someday . . .”
“It is a fantasy and must remain so. Goodnight, my lady.”
“Goodnight, Merlin.” Merlin left the room.
Morgana sat down on her bed, in a daze. She’d had no idea Merlin had felt that way. She’d noticed his looks a few times, but nothing more. Now new thoughts flooded her mind, and she pondered them as she finished getting ready for bed.
