Merlin took his jacket from the back of a chair and looked around. He knew he wouldn’t come back here. He ran a hand over the arm of the couch, the same couch they’d had so much fun on, whether they had fantastic sex or just cuddled while watching a movie. He looked over to the kitchen, the same kitchen that they’d set on fire trying to cook a four course meal - or rather they’d set on fire because they were snogging so fiercely that they forgot they still had pots and pans on the stove.
He swallowed hard against the lump in his throat when the love of his life appeared from the bedroom in nothing more than pajama bottoms and turned to go.
“Merlin, wait.”
He didn’t turn back but stopped where he stood, his hand on the doorknob.
“I don’t know why it happened. I promise it won’t happen again!”
Merlin wanted to believe, he wanted to believe it so badly. But he’d heard it all before.
“Don’t promise things you know you can’t keep.” He opened the door and stepped through, leaving his old life behind, heading into an uncertain future.
