Merlin saw it at the Saturday market. It had been two weeks since Uther Pendragon had taken Morgana from him, and he’d been searching for a way he could reach her. The heart locket was perfect. He could give it to Arthur with a picture of himself inside and Arthur could give it to Morgana. The price equaled all the money he had on him, but it was worth it. Soon Morgana would have something of his to remind her of him.
He took the locket home and carefully measures the size of the opening. Then he cut up a picture of himself and wedged it inside the locket. He wrapped it in a plastic bag and put it inside his backpack so he’d remember to take it to school tomorrow.
At lunch he made sure to drop a note in Arthur’s lap to meet him in the restroom. In the restroom, he paced until Arthur came in. “What’s this about, Merlin?” he asked.
“Can you get something to Morgana for me?”
“Sure. It might take a while, but yeah.”
“Thank you so much! Here it is.” Merlin handed Arthur the plastic bag.
“You want me to give her a plastic bag?”
“Are you kidding? It’s inside the bag. I hid it in there.”
“Ohh.” Arthur unwrapped the bag. He pulled out the locket and examined it. “It’s pretty. She’ll love it.”
“Great! Ah, how’s she doing, Arthur?”
“Naturally she hates the place and she’s still angry with father. I suspect she will be for a long time.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Why are you apologizing? The whole thing is father’s fault. He’s the one who sent her away. You did nothing wrong.”
“Thanks Arthur, I appreciate that.”
Just then, someone entered the restroom. Arthur pretended to be checking his hair in the mirror and Merlin washed his hands. After a nod at Merlin, Arthur left. Merlin dried his hands and slumped against the wall. At least Arthur still cared. That was a good thing. He knew he’s see Morgana again someday, even if it wasn’t until university. But he could wait. She was worth it.
