Merlin lay in bed, startled awake by a baby’s cry. Eliana was announcing her hunger to the world. “It’s your turn,” he heard Morgana mumble as she turned over. He wondered briefly how many times Morgana had already been up tonight then sighed and got out of bed.
He heard the cries intensify as he made his way to the kitchen to prepare the bottle of formula. Poor little thing, to have no other way to communicate. He quickly prepared the bottle and made his way to the nursery. He put the bottle down on the mattress while he gently picked up Ellie. He grabbed the bottle and headed for the rocker in the corner. “Shh, I’m here,” he told her as he sat down and started rocking.
He settled her in his arms and began feeding her. She took the bottle greedily and began sucking. Merlin began to wonder if he was this much trouble for his mum. She’d been to visit that day and had taken care of Ellie like a pro. He supposed that’s what grandmothers were-professional mothers.
He watched his little girl eat, amazed by the miracle of her. Grown from such small means, she was here and had become important so quickly. His love for her and Morgana knew no bounds, and the feeling of it all overwhelmed him at times.
She finished and he took the bottle from her. A contented sigh escaped her mouth as she fell asleep again. He brought her to his shoulder and patted her back until she burped, rather loudly for such a small being. Then he gently walked back to the crib and laid her down. She sighed and turned her head, but remained asleep.
He left the room ad padded back to his own, where he laid back down on his bed and thought back to the experience he’d just had. That feeling of overwhelming love came over him again, and he rolled over to contain it. All too soon he fell asleep again, marveling in the joy of having a family of his own.
