Merlin glanced down at Morgana’s hand, which he was holding. He winced in pain as a contraction came and she squeezed it particularly hard. But there she was, the woman he loved, laboring to bring the child they’d created into the world.
He remembered back when they were talking this over, the possibility of having a child. He’d been uncertain it was the right thing to do, bringing a child into this mixed-up world they lived in. When they’d talked it through and he’d agreed, he remembered her saying, “All I ask is that you love him or her as much is you love me. That is the most important.”
He was brought back to the present when the doctor said, “I see a head! Just a few more pushes and we will have her, Mrs. Emrys.”
Morgana groaned and pushed with a contraction. Merlin watched as the doctor leaned over on the business end. “There we go,” she said. “Very very soon.”
Morgana nearly screamed as she pushed with another contraction. “Here we go the doctor said, as Merlin saw the baby’s head protrude from Morgana’s body. A couple more pushes later, the whole baby was out and screaming for everyone to hear.
“A girl,” he said to Morgana, who was panting through the aftershocks.
“We knew that already, you idiot,” Morgana replied.
“I know. But she’s so beautiful and so perfect. Elliana.”
“Elliana,” Morgana agreed and they both stared in awe as the nurses wrapped Elliana in a blanket and put her on Morgana’s chest.
At that moment, Merlin knew he could keep his promise to Morgana, to love the baby as much as he loved her. He felt a new love well up inside him and realized that love didn’t divide; it multiplied. He reached out and touched the small head of dark hair. She was so warm he didn’t ever want to let go.
