“What do I do, Merlin? I see no exit from this arranged marriage,” Arthur said.
They were standing in Arthur’s chambers. In an hour’s time, Arthur was to be married to a foreign princess whose name he barely knew. Uther had arranged this marriage without Arthur’s knowledge or consent, not that consent mattered. He was a prince and duty-bound to marry for the good of the kingdom.
“Well, you could run away,” Merlin replied.
“Will you be serious for once?”
“I was actually being serious. The only other thing I can think of is to get married before you have to get married.”
“And how would I do that?”
Merlin grinned. “Naturally I’d go fetch Gwen and Sir Geoffrey right now and bring them here.”
“Merlin, that’s either the stupidest plan you’ve ever had or the most brilliant. Do it.”
Arthur was thrilled when Merlin turned up with both people in tow. He didn’t know how Merlin had convinced them and he didn’t want to know. He just wanted to marry Gwen as soon as humanly possible.
Arthur didn’t have to wait long. Merlin arranged everyone and Sir Geoffrey got to work declaring Arthur and Gwen husband and wife. When Arthur reported to his supposed marriage with Gwen on his arm, Uther went ballistic. But eventually he accepted that Arthur was married and he couldn’t do anything about it.
