Author's Notes: I don't care if broccoli is an anachronism so are half the things Merlin gets pelted with every time he's in the stocks. ;)
The first time it happened he’d been accused of eavesdropping. He hadn’t known that he hadn’t heard the voice, not properly.
When he’d figured out he was hearing people’s thoughts, it was fun. At first.
I can’t believe I kissed him, Susanne will kill me.
I hate broccoli.
I wonder if he knows his trousers are undone.
Then he started hearing secrets. Terrible and heartbreaking and he was powerless to act on them.
I don’t love him anymore
I wish he was dead.
The relentless voices, even during the dead of night, stole any chance of rest away from him. Days bled into restless nights until he didn’t know if he was coming and going. Instead, he was losing himself to the unspoken voices of Camelot.
Eventually Gaius confined him to his room and ensured he had no visitors with descriptions of an unpleasant and very contagious disease. Gaius passed on well wishes from his friends, and in brief moments of lucidity Merlin thought about telling him not to bother. He already knew them.
Merlin prayed for a cure. A cure or death.
And when darkness finally carried him away the relief was overwhelming.

I hope you enjoyed! I had fun with this, I may even develop it into a one-shot despite the trope.
