Arthur knew he shouldn’t have been listening, but he hated surprises.

It wasn’t that he’d planned to hear. Yes, it was nearly his birthday, and yes, he’d come home from work early and yes, he’d come in through the already open French doors instead of the front door. But it wasn’t like he’d known that Merlin and Lance were in the kitchen, in front of Lance’s open laptop, or even that they were talking about his birthday.

“It’s all booked?” Merlin asked.

“Booked and paid for and confirmed, Merlin, it’s all sorted.”

“And you’re sure Gwaine talked to Arthur’s boss. His too, actually.”

Lance huffed out an amused sigh, and Arthur, hovering in the living room, just across the hall, could imagine the way Lance pulled Merlin in to hold him, to reassure him that everything was going to be fine.

“Yes, Merlin. He wants this for Arthur just as much as you do. I can get it in writing if you really want, but…”

“No, it’s fine, I do trust him, you both, I’m just so-”

It was at that point that Arthur decided what he was doing was wrong, hit with a wave of guilt, and made a show of opening the front door, sounding exactly the same as it would from the outside.

“I’m home!” he called, “The boss let us go early so long as we stayed on call.”

Merlin stepped out of the kitchen, a little flustered, presumably to cover Lance as he shut down the laptop.

“That’s perfect,” he all but purred, backing Arthur into the door again, “The only one we’re missing now is Gwaine.”

“He’s working on a case,” Arthur reasoned, even as his breath hitched with Merlin’s hand on his chest.

“And Lance has to finish his article, so I guess it’s just you and me.”

Merlin clenched his hand, gripping Arthur’s shirt, and pulled him upstairs.

---

Arthur stole Lance’s laptop the next night, looking at the browser history while pretending to check the weather. Lance was learning, though, since he’d cleared the history. Arthur blamed Gwaine entirely for the loss of Lance’s innocence.

---

A week later, the day before Arthur’s birthday, his alarm went off as usual. Like most weekdays, he was in bed with Gwaine; it worked since they had to get up at the same sort of time, both with demanding jobs. Lance could get up whenever he liked, but as a rule seemed to wake up with Merlin, whose conservation work at the British Library started quite late. But today Gwaine rolled over Arthur, silenced the alarm, and flopped on top of him, weighing him down.

“I swear I turned that off last night.”

“That was you? I turned it on again.”

“Prat, we don’t need to get up yet, we’ve got the day off.”

Arthur eyed the top of Gwaine’s head suspiciously.

“My birthday’s tomorrow.”

“Yes, and?”

“You sure you’ve got the day right?”

“Perfectly, we’re travelling today.”

“And you couldn’t have told me about this last night so we could’ve had hot foursome sex?”

Gwaine laughed, nuzzling into Arthur’s chest like the tired little bear he was in the mornings. Arthur told him as much, and got a nibbled nipple for his efforts.

“Anyway, there’ll be plenty of time for sex later, and you know what Lance is like in the afterglow, and we actually have to pack and travel.”

Arthur mock sighed, shoving Gwaine off to get up.

“Hey, now that we’re both awake it doesn’t mean that we can’t have sex, Lance and Merlin will be sleeping in.”

“No, no, you wanted me to pack,” Arthur teased, walking off to the bathroom but leaving the door temptingly unlocked.

---

Lance was the one driving when they reached the destination, somewhere in the Peak District, a sort of cottage or cabin thing surrounded in trees. Arthur stepped out of the car and breathed in the air and just felt so alive, so free, so calm. He took his bags, and one of Merlin’s, and headed up into the cabin.

The door led into an open plan living room and kitchen setup, a door the other side of the room presumably leading into a bathroom. The stairs clung to the wall just to the left of the door, and Arthur walked up them, going to leave the bags in a bedroom.

And then he emerged into the first floor, and dropped the bags.

It was perfect, most of the floor given over to one room, a huge bed dominating the space. The ceiling consisted of the eaves of the building, a beautiful roof with beams just low enough that Arthur could see them being used for some really quite dirty things in the next few days. A mirrored wardrobe ran the length of the far wall, only stopping for the door to the ensuite, and the other walls were filled with windows.

Arthur couldn’t help himself exploring the bathroom, too. It was clearly designed for two, with its his and hers sinks, but the freestanding bath was enormous, and round, just about big enough for four. The shower was perhaps a bit too pokey, but Arthur couldn’t quite get his head around the mechanics of foursome shower sex anyway.

“Good birthday present?” Lance asked, sidling up behind him and wrapping his arms around Arthur’s chest.

“It’s perfect,” Arthur told him. Lance smiled into his shoulder.

“You haven’t seen all of it yet.”

“Do I get day-before-birthday sex now?”

Lance shook his head, a little sadly.

“Not yet, we need to walk up to the main house to let them know we’ve arrived. It’s a mile or so down the road. And we have access to the stables, and the lake, about half a mile into the forest, to row or to swim.”

Arthur turned to face him, slowly,

“It’s perfect. Did you find this?”

“Merlin had the idea, Gwaine bullied our bosses, especially yours… and I found the place.”

Arthur just leaned in and kissed him.

The next day, sated and grinning from ear to ear, galloping his horse up the track, he couldn’t help but think that his first assessment had been completely right. Perfect.
