Merlin and Morgana approached their front door with relief. Her labor had gone fairly long, then little Ellie had developed a fever on her discharge day. The poor little baby was poked and prodded, but the fever went away without the doctors finding out what caused it. That had led to three extra days in hospital and they were sick of the place. Ellie and Morgana were finally discharged today and they were looking forward to some down time at home.
Merlin opened the door and they stepped inside. Instantly, several people popped up around the room and whispered loudly, “Surprise!”
Morgana and Merlin just stood there, staring at family and friends around. She sat Ellie’s car seat down, closed the door and turned back around. Everyone was still there, grinning at the happy couple. Morgana burst into tears.
Merlin immediately turned to comfort her. Gwen and Arthur approached them cautiously. “We just wanted to welcome the little newcomer,” Gwen explained.
Morgana continued to sob in Merlin’s arms. “We’re grateful for that, really, but we’ve been waiting for a bit of downtime for ourselves, after all that time in hospital,” Merlin replied.
“Oh, of course,” Gwen said, and they returned to the others who had gathered in a clump, quietly talking amongst themselves.
Gwen explained to the group what was happening, and they all agreed they should leave. One by one they left, each giving Morgana a comforting touch. Hunith, Merlin’s mum, gave both Merlin and Morgana a quick squeeze before walking out the door. Gwen apologized to the couple, and she and Arthur left, hand in hand.
Once everyone was gone, Merlin steered Morgana to the sofa. He left Ellie sleeping in her car seat and sat down beside his wife. “Is everything all right?” he asked her.
“I’m sorry. I just wanted to be alone. It was just too much,” Morgana replied. She’d stopped crying, but her voice was a little quivery.
“I understand. Hey, we’re alone now. And look at the snacks and presents they left.” That got Morgana to laugh a little. “Good, shall I get us something to eat or do you just want to sit?”
“Just sit. We can eat later. Can you bring Ellie over here?”
“Sure.” Merlin got up and picked up the car seat to carry over to Morgana. He set Ellie on the floor by their feet and they both looked down at her. “She’s miraculous, isn’t she?”
“Yes. And it’s good to be home.” She took Merlin’s hand and together they reveled in the fact that they were home with the daughter they’d been waiting for.
