Merlin was on his way to the King’s chambers with a message, but as he neared the royal chambers he heard Arthur talking, The door was ajar and Merlin heard the King ask “Do you love him?”
“Yes.” This was Arthur’s voice too.
“Then tell him.” Again Arthur’s voice. The King was talking to himself.
“I can’t.”
“Why?”
“Because I’m King of Camelot and it’s my duty to marry and produce an heir, besides how do I even know he feels the same way?”
Merlin knew he should leave, that he shouldn’t be eavesdropping, that it would be awkward if the King was found to be talking to himself, but Merlin wanted to hear more. He wanted to hear who this mystery man was. Merlin guessed it was one of the knights closest to him.
“Ask him? If he says yes then to hell with tradition and duty”
Merlin chanced a look inside. Arthur was standing in front of a full length mirror, just as Merlin expected, talking to himself.
“The hell with tradition and duty. I can’t, can I”
“You’re the King, of course you can.”
“I’m the King of course I can. I’ll just tell him how I feel and ask him if he feels the same way.”
“You already knows he does. The looks, the staring, the not-so accidental touches. How comfortable he is with you, and you with him.”
Merlin felt a pang of sadness and jealousy, Arthur had obviously noticed these things from one of the knights, but not from him.
“So what are you going to do?”
Merlin opened the door a bit more, but didn’t notice his reflection in the mirror.
“I’m going to say Merlin, I love you.”
Merlin did he right Merlin It was him. It was then that Arthur noticed Merlin’s reflection in the mirror. “Merlin!?”
Message forgotten, Merlin just stood there grinning and said “Yes.”
