Gold. That’s what it all started with.
If he thinks about it, it’s all he’s ever wanted. Ever since he was a child; the gold, flowing through his veins, glowing in his eyes, with each time he drew on his magic. It was a thrill, a rich, heady feeling that left him reeling with each pull. A shot of mercury followed by a thick, glutinous ooze of sweet, amber-gold.
But not only that; magical objects seemed always to have a glow about them. The crystal he had Morgana steal caught the firelight, flashed fleeting gold. It could hold the shining, but only for a moment.
The Cup of Life was golden. Rings glowed. The Triskelion was forged of gold, so it was said. And crystals, so many crystals.
Mordred, since magic took him and swept him up in its embrace, had wanted them all.
And then, with age, and with a little more knowledge of the world, his greed stripped of the need for enchantment. Gold coins, throwing light back into the room, or the pouch they sat in. His desire spread even to jewels; catching the sun in different colours, different shades, like crystals painted the whole way through in the richest of colours.
Of course, after that there were different types of gold. The wheat fields in the afternoon before sunset, the liquid gold-green of the filtered forest light. The way the dawn gilds the walls of the castle of Camelot.
And hidden within the castle walls, protected by stone and sword and as much magic as Mordred can cocoon him in, choke him in, the burnished skin of one boy, breathing deep against his chest. Close and solid but slipping away with every heartbeat like water through his fingers.
