Hand clasped in Morgana’s, Merlin looked back at Arthur. The anguish on the Prince’s face was easily readable. “You know why I have to do this, Arthur.”
“No, I don’t understand. What is it you see in her? She’s a monster!”
“If she’s a monster then I’m a monster. Morgana and I are the same.”
“The same? What do you mean by that?”
Merlin took a deep breath. “I have magic too.”
“No, it’s not possible. You’re just Merlin.”
“I’m so much more. Blostma.” A rose appeared in Merlin’s outstretched hand.
Arthur watched, in both fascination and horror. “I can’t believe it.”
“Believe it, Arthur. This is goodbye.”
“This can only end badly for you, Merlin.” Arthur felt strangely calm now.
“It could, yes, but it’s my choice.” Merlin looked briefly at Morgana, who nodded. “Take care of yourself, Arthur.”
Merlin and Morgana chanted a long phrase together, and a whirlwind began to surround them. Soon they disappeared. The only sign they had been there was the rose Merlin had created, laying battered on the ground.
