Author's Notes: I came up with this game (which might not work in real life, I've never tried it) for an RP, and I really like it, so I thought I should get some more use out of it! The background to this feels slightly different, like they all met at uni
“Come on, Arthur! It’s tradition!”
Arthur rolls his eyes while Gwen can’t see and reaches forward into the skittles bowl without looking.
“Every year since we met, on New Year’s Day we have played this game. We’ve been with different people, had different problems in our lives, even pursued different careers. But we’ve still met, and played.”
Elaine pours the vodka, passes it out, already half drunk and tipping the bottle with mock ceremony. Lance pulls Elaine close and she giggles, falling into his lap.
“In three, two, one,” Gwaine counts, and they each drop their skittle into their vodka.
“Red,” Elaine says, watching as the clear liquid starts to change colour.
“Yellow,” Lance calls out, and Elaine pouts at him.
“Fate hates us,” she teases, and watches the others.
“Green,” Merlin calls, waving the shot glass in the air.
“Yellow,” Gwaine says, “It’s nearly green.”
“Not nearly enough,” Merlin tells him, leaning in. Morgana throws a handful of skittles at the back of his head.
“Not yet! And I have red,” she says, and she glances over at Elaine, just long enough to assure herself of the colour.
“Green,” Arthur says, voice quiet.
“Orange,” Gwen huffs, downing her glass in one.
Elaine tips off Lance’s lap, pushes him up and towards Gwaine. Lance makes his way around the round dinner table and leans down, hand resting on Gwaine’s shoulder. Lance lets him close the space between them for a quick, chaste kiss. He pulls back, until Gwaine cups the back of his head and pulls him down for a harder kiss.
Elaine whistles, and Gwaine laughs it off. Lance too, smiling and heading back over to her.
Next Arthur stands up, brushes his shirt down, and walks straight over to Merlin. Merlin meets him half way, draping over him. Arthur’s kiss is swift, but Merlin holds him close, puts his hands over his arse, and his tongue in his mouth.
“What?” Arthur asks, going tense.
“Free pass, and I’ve been waiting five years for you to come up for me. You are hot, Arthur.”
Merlin smiles, and Arthur sags a little, walking back to his seat.
Morgana takes her turn next, heading straight over to Elaine. She takes her hand, delicately, pulls her to standing and wraps an arm around her waist. The kiss is slow, sucking in Elaine’s lip and licking over it, soft. Elaine shivers, hanging on to her. When Morgana pulls back she tucks a loose strand of Elaine’s hair behind her ear, and lets her go.
It’s a little quiet when it’s all over, and in the drunken haze everything’s a little more possible. They look at each other in a slightly different light. It should be nothing new, because this game has served to set the pattern of their relationships year after year. But this time it’s different. This time things will change and maybe for good, and part of them realises it, realises the shift, the rightness of it all.
By this time next year, Gwen will be in France as an interpreter, making her home there. And, in the years to come, the six that remain will change the tradition, rig the game, so only two colours come up. The two girls and the four boys, and it will be an affirmation rather than recreation.
But that thought’s a little bit frightening for now. Arthur reaches for his shot glass first, downing it in one and catching the skittle between his teeth. Gwen gets up to put the music on, and the party, and life, goes on into the new year.
