Nothing could have possibly prepared Merlin for the challenges (and rewards) of fatherhood.
Family comedies never quite captured the struggles of raising four-year-old twins. The fights. The temper tantrums. The nonstop mischief.
On the other hand, TV shows failed to express the insane amounts of joy two toddlers could possibly bring to their parent's lives. As Merlin tucked his pajama-clad sons into bed, his heart swelled with love.
“Can we wait for daddy to come home?” Lance asked, rubbing his sleepy eyes.
Merlin smiled, smoothing down his son's dark, unruly hair.
“He's working late tonight, darling.”
“Will you tell us a story, daddy?” Will asked, sitting up in the bed. He gave his father the same puppy dog eyes that his godfather had used on Merlin during their thirty years of friendship. He looked so much like the man he earned his namesake from, Merlin couldn't help but laugh.
“What story do you want to hear?”
“The Adventures of Frodo and Sam!” Both boys called out, nearly jumping out of the bed in their excitement. They'd seen the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy countless times, but loved hearing their fathers retell the story.
By the time Frodo and Sam reached Rivendell, Lance had already drifted off to sleep, his head on his brother's shoulder. Will blinked up at his father sleepily, before his eyes closed as well. As quietly as possible, Merlin covered the boys with the blanket and made to tiptoe out of the bedroom, so as not to wake them.
Around eleven, Arthur returned from work, clad in his scrubs and looking exhausted. Merlin came to take his coat, but was swept into his husband's arms instead.
“Hey, Sweetheart.” Merlin laughed, before soft lips were on his, and he lost the desire to find anything more to say.

Closing notes: As always, Merlin does not belong to me. Also, am I the only one with the headcanon that Merlin would name his son after Will?
