Merlin probably had no sense of time, Arthur thought. He can’t count the number of times Merlin was either too early or too late. Sometimes he wondered if he should rely on Merlin for anything time-related at all.
Then again, Merlin did have his moments. Although rare, there are occasions where Arthur’s bumbling servant had a hold of the schedule.
Sure, when it came to waking Arthur up in the morning and serving his king breakfast he was far too early. And yes, he took way too long and was unbelievably slow about his chores and getting Arthur’s horses mucked out or polishing his armour. But when it really mattered, Merlin was always right on time.
Like, when all those years ago Merlin had stopped Arthur before drinking a cup laced with poison. Or when Arthur had slain a Unicorn and had to repent for it, Merlin was there. When he was ready to run a sword through his father after a misleading image of his mother, Merlin was there to stop him from making a terrible mistake.
And like now, as Arthur contemplated on whether or not the idea of banishing Guinevere was actually a mistake or not, Merlin was there. He followed the king’s every order and was prompt. He did not pry or ask any questions, just let Arthur be and never let his side.
But that’s alright. Because Merlin being there means that he’ll be there right when Arthur needs him.
