The lake lay like a mirror in the heart of the forest. Puffy white clouds and a blazing sun were perfectly reflected, surrounded by trees that pointed inwards like great, green spears.
Arthur, faced with the combined power of his five knights and Merlin all making pouty-faces at him, agreed to make camp, though it was still early. They had found an open yet sheltered spot, with sand-coloured pebbles and hard-packed ground only broken up by roots.
The knights dumped their chainmail with grateful groans, stumbling down to the water’s edge to kneel and wash sweat and grime from their faces and necks. Merlin and Arthur began to unload the horses.
Without warning, Percival “bumped” into Gwaine and sent him tumbling face first into the lake. Gwaine flailed around and sat sputtering and dripping in the shallows.
“You know I have to ride back in these clothes.”
Percival nodded. “And thanks to me they will be clean.”
Lancelot, who never seemed to see these things coming, leaned forward and held out a hand to Gwaine. “I’ll help you out.”
Gwaine smiled winningly and grasped the proffered hand. “No, no, let me help you in.”
And so, knight number two made a great splash and a lot of undignified noises.
“You know, this isn’t half bad,” Lancelot said to Gwaine as they were sitting there side by side, rivulets of water running down their necks, and white shirts clinging to their bodies.
“It’s quite nice once you get used to it,” Gwaine agreed, lifting one foot to try to shake the water from his boot.
It took a mighty combined effort, but between the two of them they managed to wrestle Percival into the water. The giant fell with his two fellow knights all but hanging off him. They cried out in alarm as the mirror rushed up to shatter around them once more, but Percival was laughing.
Elyan and Leon had the good sense to get their clothes off and throw themselves in before the others had a chance to get to them. They cut through the green mirror side by side, Elyan like a sleek, dark pine, Leon pale like the flesh of a spring branch stripped of its skin.
Elyan rolled over on his back and waved to the thwarted pranksters, who were still dragging their sodden clothes off. As soon as they were naked, Percival swam after Elyan to dunk him for spoiling their pleasure, while Gwaine and Lancelot set their predatory sights on their King and his manservant.
Arthur and Merlin had been laughing between themselves at the knights, and then the moment came when they realised they were next. Merlin quickly escaped behind a tree, leaving Arthur to his fate.
“Don’t you dare. I am your King!” Arthur protested as he was tackled by two naked knights, but his indignation quickly dissolved into helpless laughter. He gave as good as he got, and had they been on the training field he could have taken them both, but despite his superior strength and skill his clothes nonetheless slipped off him piece by piece, until he was bare and golden in the sun, and being carried over Gwaine’s shoulder down to the water.
One girlish scream later, and the King was equal to all his knights.
Merlin remained behind, mouth dry and body hot, unable to enjoy the joke anymore. He saw Arthur pounce on Gwaine, submerging them both in a tangle of limbs. Further out, Elyan was swimming for shore with Percival right behind him, and as Merlin watched, Percival got hold of Elyan’s ankle and pulled him back, but there was no wrestling between them, only a moment of skin sliding against skin, before Elyan threw himself forward again and the chase continued.
Merlin turned his head away and made himself look around for firewood and a good place to build the fire. It should be somewhere underneath a branch so that the knights could dry their clothes. He was just beginning to pick up the first sticks, when thin, strong hands closed about his shoulders and pulled him upright.
“When are you coming in then?” Leon asked, hands sliding together to undo the knot of Merlin’s neckerchief.
“That’s alright, I took a bath last week,” Merlin answered, his voice thick.
“But they’re waiting for you.” The neckerchief was whisked away, and the hands caressed his bare collarbones before finding the lapels of his jacket and gently pulling them back.
Merlin swallowed.
“You look like we’re going to drown you,” Lancelot said, coming towards them as calm and as natural as a frog in its pond, for all that he was naked. Merlin was mesmerised by the drops of water sliding down his chest, past his navel and down, down, down.
Lancelot’s cold fingers found the hem of Merlin’s shirt, and once Leon had pulled the jacket off, they divested him of that too.
Despite himself, Merlin looked towards the water. Gwaine was floating on his back while Elyan carded his fingers through his long hair, Arthur and Percival were watching the men on shore.
“Hurry up and get down here!” Arthur shouted at them. “It’s getting cold.”
Percival expressed his concern by quickly wrapping his arms around His Majesty, who laughed and returned the embrace. The muscles in his back played as he reached up to wrap his arms around Percival’s neck.
Then there were four hands on the lacings of Merlin’s trousers, and he shuddered because he was about to be embarrassed in front of them all and for some reason his body didn’t care one whit.
“Oh,” Leon said, warm and amused.
“Oh,” said Merlin, breath hitching as Lancelot pulled his trousers down and Leon could wrap his cool palm around Merlin’s hot, stiff cock. Merlin thrust up, hips moving on their own, but all he got was a handful of rough strokes before they let him go and were leading him down to the mirror. To the waiting knights, and Arthur.
