Merlin looks on, heart heavy. Lord Pendragon’s profile is set in a stoic mask as the vicar speaks of Heaven and God’s loving embrace. A chilled mist falls steadily.
Holding the umbrella over them both, Merlin feels sick guilt at hoping his wait is finally over.
Guinevere received the letter saying her father had contracted yellow fever and though Arthur begged her to keep her distance, his lady rushed home. Now they are laying her to rest.
After twelve years of marriage, it's possible Arthur might be Merlin’s once again but this isn’t how he ever wished it would happen.
