I love my job. I really do. Every day I get to see young minds fizz and whirl and gain knowledge they didn't have before. It's positively wonderful.
But every now and again, my students never fail to... surprise me.
For example: We're currently reading Noyes' "The Highwayman" (published in 1907...I believe) in class, to begin our poetry unit. After the first reading, I asked in a bell ringer (or warm up, or bell work, or whatever) why they thought the poem became popular. Here are some of the gems:
"The reason this poem became popular is I think because it musta got a lot of hits or something and then everyone knew about it like on twitter."
"Because the language is a different language other than English but the same."
"its poplar cause we hate the birtish"
And, of course... my favorite: "I think this poem is popular because a lot of people like it."
I adore my kids... but every now and again, I begin to wonder.
