A few weeks ago, I asked my students to write on the topic of being stuck on a desert island. The questions were simple: what would you bring with you, who would you call (if you could only call one person), and what one song would you listen to (if you could only listen to one song).

I meant this to be sort of an abstract reflection on what our favorite/most meaningful things in life are, but some took it a bit too literally, making me feel like a rather cruel person. Some choice responses:

"I would call 911. I don't want to stay on a desert island for a year! If I can talk to the police, I have a chance to get out. I would listen to "Halaluya". I think listening to a Christian song, I will have hope."

"The one song I choose to listen to is "Tomorrow is another day". It can help me to get through this and be strong."

"Desert Island is a place that I would be really afraid because it would be lonely and hopeless. I think the person I would call...is the President of the United States. If I keep calling him, I believe he would help me one day."

:(

Haha.
