Question (Follow up):

Where you start attracting attention with high levels of resources, the same comes with Fame of any level, and merits like Status at a high level. How would high resources necessarily attract more attention?

Answer (Alex):

The first answer (and there are several), is that being a supernatural multi-billionaire attracts attention from people who'd otherwise ignore you if you just have Fame or certain status types. Super-rich people tend to attract a certain type of attention and it's *difficult* to hide enormous amounts of wealth. Unlike in the movies or spy novels, it's really tough to be the secret mastermind who somehow controls vast amounts of wealth. Governments have had an unpleasant habit of sticking their noses into that sort of thing, and they can be difficult to buy off. The same applies to criminal organizations.

******************************end quote***************************

Not entirely sure if this is the place to post this or not, but something occured to me that should noted, and may just help fix things.

It is not, commonly, the accumulation of vast amounts of wealth that is noticed by governments and other entities, but the amount of buying and spending that is done in a given time span (ie, the cash flowing in and out of those accounts). Vast amounts of investments (even liquid ones) are usually ignored. It's only when those amounts change rapidly that alarms are sounded.

This may help within the Requiem venue (as most vampires take a great deal of time to do anything, and have had much more time to accumulate a Resources 6)... the other venues? Not so much of a help, but it's a start....

As a follow-up, something has to be done, as Resources 5 has assets at $500,000 listed. A good 40% of the population of my area EASILY overcomes that with JUST their house.

I don't have Chronicler's Guide to see the chart in there, so I'd be interested in seeing what they propose.

Ah, yeah, 500k is resources 4.

5M is still not that impressive. There are prolly several thousand people in the DC Metro area that have 5M in assets.

When you think about it, most professional sports atheletes have close to that and not many are all that well known. (seriously, how many of you can pick out the starting right tackle for your local sports team? or hell, any other team?)

Where I live (Norwalk, CT) properties regularly go for $800k (up to 3 mil & 5mil, if not more). It would be disgustingly easy to have $5mil in assets and no one bat an eye where I live. A director where I work has 3 houses (Sherman, CT; Key West, FL; somewhere in Scotland) and an apartment in NYC... and he's just a /director/. $5 mil wouldn't bat an eye where I live.

Remember, White Wolf is based in back-woods Georgia, so 5 million there has to be translated to places with literacy and running water (joking--from Arkansas). Seriously, good points but just talk to your STs to adjust the assets accordingly.
BUT...Mr. MST, could we maybe get Resource levels that are more relative, like Top 1% of area, Top 10% of area, etc?

The system there does not have a chart; it deals with such resources in a nebulous manner. One can be easily extrapolated by just doing a x10 for each level beyond 5. Using this, Bill Gates clocks in as the only 9, several people clock in at 8s.

The guide does put cap on your Resources based on your Intelligence and your Academics or Politics score (its great to see Politics get some attention). I would personally add to that additional requirements of approval levels (e.g. High for 6, Top for 7, Global for beyond that) and the requirement of some other merit to demonstrate a steady source of income, such as mortal Status.

If a character has a bulwark in place that explains their source of income (such as high mortal Status), then the fact that they possess large funds isn't going to be something that raises flags. What they do with it, however, certainly will raise flags.
