I'm an only child, and I also begged my parents for a sibling because I was so lonely. Living in the country with no one my age for miles was both a blessing and a curse. I loved the alone time and peace, but I also didn't have anyone to play with unless my cousins were staying at my grandma's house on vacation, and it kinda stunted my social development. Having a dog helped, but dogs aren't that great at playing board games. :C
I was lucky enough to live next door to kids through most of my childhood and saw my extended family fairly often, but I was still lonely, like you. On the other hand, I've known only children who overall were happier about not having siblings. I've been on both sides of the fence though, having siblings comes with it's own issues.
There are a lot of variables that go into raising kids.
