Rec: Impossible Things

Oops I missed yesterday. Here is one to make up for it

Story: Impossible Things
Author: Casira
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1848
Author's Summary: After the events of "Family of Blood", the Doctor dreams of lives, loves, and what he most needs.
Characters: Ten, Martha
Warnings: None

Recc'ed because: John Smith is no more, but the Doctor still has his dreams. It is angsty and heartbreaking like a lot of Tenth Doctor stories, but it doesn't sacrifice characterization to do it and it's not afraid to explore the side of the Doctor (especially Ten) that holds on to his companions more than a bit selfishly. It is also beautifully written and I love the metaphor of human hearts still trying to live in pairs.

**

The trouble is that he remembers.

The human heart, so strange in its singularity, does things differently. The Doctor knows more than the physical fact of that now; he's come to understand the metaphors of it, how it hurts and yearns and breaks so utterly, the demands it makes. He'd never thought before of how it tries -- it always tries -- to live in pairs just like his own, as if a union with another person truly would create someone complete in his own terms.

But maybe that's just melancholy speaking. After all, he has both hearts back and it still hasn't set things right.
