Recced because: What starts out seemingly as a complete AU, quickly turns into a terrifying and twisted story, involving a secret, evil branch of Unit, technology that's scary in both it's implimentation in the story and how scary it could be if used in real life, and a Jack who's victimized by both technology and the environment he's been placed in. Also features a kick-ass Ianto who takes no prisoners and is very much like the man who put shot Owen in the shoulder in Capt. Jack Harkness and used a stun gun to incapacitate one of the villians in Meat.
It was a chilly night and Jack was glad Ianto had told him to take his coat. They hailed a cab and rode in silence, hand in hand, down to Cardiff Bay, and Roald Dahl Plass. Ianto paid the driver, and they both slid out onto the vast open space.
Jack let his eyes follow the silver monolith up and up, towards the stars, then trailed his eyes around the perimeter, along the white pillars, to the building with the strange writing on it. It was beautiful, lit up in orange and purple hues. Ianto took Jack’s hand in his and led him towards the monolithic pillar.
They stopped on a curbstone and Ianto held Jack in his arms, back to chest, as they both looked out towards the bay. They were the only ones there, save for the seagulls. Once more, Jack thought how beautiful it was, and then, then the damned curbstone began to lower itself!
He gave a little yelp of surprise and would have fallen if it hadn’t been for Ianto’s hold on him. “Ianto?!” he cried as they descended into the underground. “Damn it, if you’re laughing at me I’ll-“
“I’m not,” Ianto assured. “There’s no easy way of telling you this, so I’m going to show you instead.”
And show him he did.
They’d entered a large cavernous space, with metal walkways and glass and concrete. The monolith from the Plass outside, descended down into the space, and into the ground below.
Jack gaped. “Where are we?” he whispered.
“Torchwood Three, the Hub,” Ianto said, and helped him off the stone. “We’re a secret organization charged with
monitoring, combating and researching extraterrestrial threats to the British Empire. As well as monitor a Rift in time and space that runs through Cardiff centre.”
Jack couldn’t close his mouth. And Ianto looked dead serious too.
“Aliens? I see,” Jack said, and blinked. He stared around the space, at the work stations, computers, monitors, walkways, and was that a greenhouse up there? This had to be some sort of elaborate joke. “And this has what to do with me, exactly?”
“You are our leader,” Ianto said simply. “Captain Jack Harkness, leader of Torchwood Three. I was the receptionist, sometimes field agent. And your lover.”
