Recced because: I actually hate
livii for writing this story because it broke my heart into a million little pieces. It's beautiful and horrible and, as I'm sure anyone who reads Who fan fiction is well aware, her writing is always magnificent. I don't actually want to say anything about the plot, so no spoilers. Just read it.
They're just outside Paris, in the early 1970s, and they are living history, here and now.
The first night, Hex negotiates a room for the night with badly-remembered school French; they can understand the locals, but only just, as if the TARDIS is fading out, out, out. Ace stands guard over the place they landed, where the ship had blinked out of existence without so much as a parting breeze, as if they didn't exist at all.
He finally gets her to come up to go to sleep, much later. There's only one bed; he lies on top of the sheets and they each stare at the ceiling for hours.
After a week of waiting, silently wandering through fields under cloudy skies, they leave a note, scratched onto the side of the inn, in English. They're running out of their emergency supply of money and can no longer properly understand what anyone says. Ace does it while Hex keeps a lookout.
"What did you write?" he asks that night, after they sneak onto the boat under cover of darkness, not wanting to waste money on the fare.
"I said we still had our keys," she replies, curling up with him in the cold cargo hold, causing him to inhale sharply and smile just a little, despite himself. "And we would always want to go home."
