It's that time of year again

Since my birthday fell on a weekday this year, we decided to celebrate it during the weekend. Technically, the only celebration I had on my actual birthday was when the entire staff at my school celebrated my birthday, and that was only because my Principal and I share a birthday. That quickly escalated into a celebration for me too, once the word spread, but in reality it was all for her.

My friends and I do theme dinners for our birthdays. We pick a cuisine or culture that we're feeling that particular year and we find a restaurant to match. This year, I fancied being Mexican. We found a few Mexican places but they didn't have any reviews to reommend them. Eventually we decided on a Cuban restaurant, 'Cuba Libre' which came highly recpmmended because they review mentioned that they had good-looking waiters. Of course we were sold on that point.

When we reached the restaurant, we realized that they the reviewers had been exaggerating when he said that there were good looking waiters. Or maybe they were not on duty that day. Who knows? At the most there were maybe 1 or 2 good looking waiters. The rest could have passed off as hot if we had been drunk enough and that wasn't for lack of trying.

After we'd ordered our food and a jug of Sangria (mmmm...), the posse decided to give me the pressies. Apprently Hani had considered giving me a an inflatable mini-pool thingy that they would have given to me, blown up. Thankfully, the smidgen of good sense they had, talked them out of it. Instead I got a Taboo board game - for the board game geek in me (which came in handy later in the night). They also gave me a Mr Potatohead toy which you could manipulate to create different expressions for him - to be put at my desk, to cheer me up. I was super amused and appreciative.

When the food arrived, we found out that the portions were tiny and even as we ate we were talking about possibly going elsewhere for Round 2 of food to fill us up - bottomless pits that we were. Having said that, the food was certainly good - just not satisfying. The Sangria however, was taking its effect on us and we were feeling ditzy and loud.

1 of the 2 good looking waiters at the restaurant was our waiter. Well actually there was another waiter, but he got scared by our loudness and left us to our own devices. Lets call our good looking waiter Gustav. Don't ask why we named him that - we were absolutely 'certain' that that was his name despite his confused expression when called that. Anyway, he was super nice to our table. When Hani was getting high on eating the cherries in our jug of Sangria, he brought her a small jar of cherries so that she could go nuts. And when we the girls mentioned that it was my birthday, he got me a free drink - 'Sex on the Beach' (hahaha!) and he kept coming over to ask me how the drink was. Thinking that I might be offended by the rude name of the drink (which, hello, fee alcohol!), he apologized and told me that he's really a nice guy. All the while there was a lot of rubbing my back and touching and I forget whatever else he said to me. Haha.

Then there's my favourite part of the night. We had been hanging around (even though we'd long since finished our meal) for the band. We heard they were good and they really were!! We were all salsaing in our seats. At some point, the lead singer started singing the birthday song -to me!! The scary part is that my friends hadn't even told the waiters to pass the message to the band to sing it, yet!! And they'd gotten my name right and everything! We even asked Gustav and he looked confused. We were scared by their psychic abilities.

The next order of the night was to go to a club and have a few drinks and chill out (since Liza wasn't in dance gear). When we got to the club we wanted to go to, we didn't feel like paying the steep cover. And the crowds turned us off too. Eventually, we hopped into a cab and decided to go to Arab Street for dinner part 2 and to play Taboo.

After we'd eaten, we started playing Taboo. We had so much fun that we played till 2-ish in the morning. Little did I realise that my cousins and sister were at home waiting to surprise me with a cake. When I finally got home, they were too happy to see me since they'd been eyeing the cake for so long. Needless to say, after 2 dinners, I really wans't very hungry, so after a few bites, I was done. A huge chunk of the cake is still in my fridge. After that, we, too, played Taboo, this time till almost 6 am. It was crazy and violent.

All in all, a fun night was had. Will update with photographs once Liza uploads them.

rl, birthday
