A working mother's lot

It's World Book Day tomorrow. Now, it's a very worthy thing and I'm all in favour of encouraging kids to read more, and the book token is nice, but... BUT ( Read more... )

Huh. We are having the Book Fair this week, it was to coincide with the Science Fair last night. You know, so all the parents who showed up would be suckered into buying the $15.00 "Paula Deen" cookbook and the $17.00 pilates mat and tapes. *sighs*

I know the money goes towards our library buying new books, but man. My school will nickel and dime you to death with fundraisers. Luckily we avoid the dressing up bullets.

You have my sympathies.

And you have mine. It never stops - if it's not a sponsored this, it's bring-something-for-the-raffle that, or an appeal for school funds, or a Easter/Summer/Christmas fair, or contributions to school trips... I do love the school, but sometimes it just gets out of hand.

And books should be provided by the government for heaven's sake! Things that important shouldn't be down to fundraisers (but they so often are)

I always found the 'bring something for the raffle' was the best option - because I still buy up odd things in Boots sale after Christmas, and at least one 'After Christmas half-price goody bag' from Avon, which sit in a basket in the spare room so that they could be used as 'instant presents' for the 'Mum it's X's birthday tomorrow and I forgot,' moments, and also the 'Mum, I need something for the raffle' moments too!

You see, I'm just not that organised (and I know it doesn't take that much organisation really, but just getting through the day without all the juggling crashing down about my ears is all I can take!). I think I'll stock up in the post-Christmas sell-off but never seem to quite get round to it. I buy stuff to put away for the kid's birthdays, however, then either weaken and give it to them in a rare moment of 'aww... they're such good kids really...', or dicover it at the back of the wardrobe years later when they've outgrown it.

It isn't really organisation - it is an excuse to buy footery things in the sales - any sales!

And I have a plastic basket in which lives odd bits of wrapping paper, odd cards and things, so the odd unallocated presents go in there too - so that when I realise that I have forgotten something again, there is usually something there to do. Keeping the wrapping paper there became a neccesity because I usually realise I need it after the local papershop has closed - and any other shop requires a car trip!
