[life is fragile]

Life is so fragile. I haven't mentioned my thoughts on hurricane Katrina yet but maybe I should. I kinda stopped writing political and news-worthy events a long time ago because I lost my drive to do so. It's not that I stopped caring about what happened in the world. I read the news everyday and maybe even a little too much. I analyze everything and I have strong opinions. Recently I read an article on the world's repsonse to the devastation that hurricane Katrina caused. A lot of world leaders felt sympathetic, while some said that such a rich country like ours should have had adequate sea walls built for such a below sea level city like New Orleans. People in other countries are debating on whether we deserve aid or not, and a spokesperson from the U.N even mentioned that he thinks it is selfish that aide that is supposed to go to the tsunami relief efforts is now going to a rich country like ours. One world leader even said this was an accident waiting to happen because the United States is the biggest contributor to global warming and because of global warming hurricanse spawn more often. It is a real chaotic mess. I cry when I watch the news. It is very hard to take in. What these world leaders don't realize is that there is a race issue involved here and it is mostly African-American individuals that are affected by this tragedy. Extremely poor people that have no insurance and no way to rebuild their homes. People don't realize that they couldn't get out of the city because lack of money and transportion prevented them from doing so. What I see on t.v. and what I read in the papers, how can it not be evident to people that it isn't a race issue? I read somewhere that they knew the superdome wasn't going to be an adequate place of safety for those thousands of people. All of the rich and well off people got out just in time. It is sad and devastating and I truly wish I could do something to help. There are so many politics getting involved already and I wish people would just help these people and give them food and water and I just wish everything could be okay. There is no need for people to say things like "this was an accident waiting to happen, this is what the United State gets for blowing up another country"...blah blah blah. How about the hurricane hits the president's ranch in Crawford, Texas next time and all of his white rich friends. New Orleans and the coastal areas of Mississippi and Alabama are forever changed. Things are awful and it almost seems like a movie and it feels trivial to be sitting here writing this. It's hard for me not to get all political about. But what it boils down to, yes this did happen in America and it doesn't matter how many nuclear weapons you can build, how many technologies we have, how many cars a person owns, how big a person's house is, nature is the boss and we didn't need a terrorist attack to make us realize how fragile life is. We've gotten so far away from what it is to help other people out. As a capitalistic society we are so shallow and selfish. All we can think about is how expensive gas is going to be. Meanswhile you have thousands of dead bodies floating around in a soup of flooded water, sewage and oil. People that haven't eaten anything in 5 days. People dying in hospitals because they cannot get chemo treatments or dialysis or oxygen. People stranded on their rooftops with no sign of helicopters anywhere. People are going crazy and shooting each other and god forbid they steal things that they need. Even police officers are stealing because the situation is so desperate. Horrible stories such as a woman trying to get help after her husband died on a bridge while they were seeking saftey, and all a police officer did was say, "you gonna have to move this dead body before it starts to smell." I just can't imagine what it is like to be in a floating city where the threat of more flooding looms and there is no way out but the possibility of drowning and being surrounded by chaos. Those poor people. They feel like their country has failed them. They feel abandoned and like not enough is being done. I wish I could just save them all. Save the whole world from the chaos that takes over from time to time.

We will all go on with our lives as usual. That is what people do. I am grateful for what I have in my life, even if I cannot control my emotions and even if I feel my path in life is somewhat fuzzy and the boundaries are not as clear as I'd like them to be. My outlook on life changes more everyday. But when things like this happen it makes my outlook change even more. I go with the flow. Where the energy of life takes me. All I need is that energy. Sometimes it is low and I feel like there is no path in sight. Soemtimes it is high and I feel that life couldn't be better. Most of the time I only have a medium supply of that energy. But like the title of this entry, life is fragile, so handle it with care.
