Rome was a great empire, with a lot of new ideas. It was highly civilized and brought many a new inventions to the world. So why did it fall?
Diplomacy and Greed
Many people like to blame the fall of Rome on the emperors the governed over it. Although I strongly agree that the diplomatic system of Rome was "shady" for lack of better words, but what government isn't? A country doesn't fall because of a few mistakes. Rome had a very strong constitution, laws, and a huge leap forward in new technology than other countries. They became blinded simply by their own ambitions. The superiority complex rose within the walls of Rome, and thus so did their vision of being “immortal”.
Who doesn’t want to live in a place where they had running water, and heat. The cities of Rome became a luxury to live in to most folks; the streets soon began to overflow with immigrants. The more people that flocked into Rome the more money the government had to put out. Since Rome was so technological advanced, and so wealthy, they indulged in what they thought they deserved. In doing so they started running low on money, and being able to produce money. The economy started to slowly break down; I don’t believe this was a diplomatic problem more than a human greed factor.
It is a fact that greed is one of humans greatest weakest, and flaws. It doesn’t surprise me this was one of Rome’s greatest contributors to its fall.
Plagues and Diseases
We can’t say looking back on history this was entirely the fault of the Roman Empire. Rome was one of the cleanest empires in history, so why did it become infested with diseases? With the mass migration from other countries this was inevitable. With plagues and diseases being brought into Rome from eastern countries the population was falling very fast. Due to the mass about of people in condescend areas; it didn’t take long for these diseases to spread. This was a leading factor, the less people the less taxes and the financial situation of Rome continued to fall.
To trust or not to trust, that is the question.
Rome, a great empire, who would dare attack it? Well everyone wanted Rome. Rome controlled one of the greatest armies of the time. Their borders were easily defended, one at a time. Betraying Rome? That would be foolish, so they thought. Starvation and poverty soon took over the minds of the Visigoths. With the inability to defend both borders of the large Roman Empire, it didn’t take long for the Visigoths to break through, and launch a full raid on Rome. This may have been to a tactical error of the Roman elites, but highly doubtful. Due to their increased size, and arrogant attitude, I believe Rome simply never believed that people would be foolish enough to attack them. They didn’t expect it, and therefore did not have the numbers to fight back.
So why did Rome fall?
There is no one reason why Rome fell. It was the contributions of many different factors. In my own opinion, I think the leading factors are simply greed and arrogance, nothing more nothing less. They believed no one would touch them, and they wanted the world. I do believe if Rome never fell it would be a great and powerful economy in this day. It would I believe even exceed the power of the United States. Rome had many things going for it, but I do believe that was its downfall. It was advanced, it brought people. It was diplomatically and technology stable as well. These were not common things in the Dark Ages, and people wanted them. It leads once again to the greed of humanity. Was it entirely Rome’s fault that it fell? I don’t think so. If humanity was not greedy, Rome’s streets would not have become over flown with people. If humanity was not greedy, there would have been not wars or raids on Rome for money. Greed was the foundation of the fall of Rome, the Empires and the peoples.
