[For Pam]

Karen liked to think she knew Jim Halpert pretty damn well, and that was one of the reasons she'd decided on doing what she was going to tonight ( Read more... )

Staying in the crash room was starting to get stifling, but until she had a finished hut, it wasn't like there was anywhere else for Pam to stay, and despite herself, she was almost -- but not quite -- starting to get used to it. With as strange as everything was here, it was all she could do to try to adjust right away. Otherwise, it'd just be more difficult.

At the sound of Karen's voice, she glanced up from where she'd been sitting cross-legged on the bed she'd temporarily claimed, and a smile spread across her face instantly. All things considered, she didn't think she'd ever been quite so glad to see Karen before. Back home, she probably never would have been, anyway. If she'd gone through with what she'd intended to say after the coal walk, there would've been no better way to make things permanently awkward between them.

That hadn't happened here, though, and Pam was on her feet before even responding. "I say I definitely can't turn down an offer like that," she replied with one short nod, and crossed the rest of the distance to the doorway. "Where to?"

Not that it mattered. Anything would have been preferable to the crash room.

"I was thinking the beach, but if you don't want to walk down that far, we can always just hang out down at the Hub. Less of a drunken walk back here." Karen gave Pam a pleased look when it seemed like she wasn't going to have to do any work to get her to go along.

"Oh, I'm fine with anything, believe me," Pam assured her, with what was very nearly a dry laugh, "as long as it gets me out of here for a while." That it was Karen who came to find her was slightly surprising, but Pam didn't want to dwell on that much. After all, she'd been told that the two of them were on good terms when she'd been there before, and with as weird as just about everyone was acting around her, she was as grateful for the company as she was the excuse to get out.

"Come on, then," Karen said, and she beckoned Pam to follow as she made her way back upstairs. "I'm thinking we should hang out at the Hub," she said over her shoulder. "There's always a good chance someone's doing some drunken karaoke, and that's always fun to watch."

Karen wondered if Pam actually knew what the Hub was, and decided explaining couldn't hurt. "The Hub's across the path, by the way. It's like an open bring your own alcohol kinda bar. Most of the time people throw parties there."

"So that's what that is," Pam replied as she followed along. She'd noticed the building, but truth be told, she hadn't spent much time outside of the Compound in the days since she'd arrived. As much as she couldn't wait to have a hut and get out of there, leaving just to wander seemed like it'd increase the possibility of an awkward encounter, and she was trying to keep those to a minimum. She'd had more than enough of those already. "Sounds good to me. I don't think I could pass up drunken karaoke at a time like this." As long as she didn't take to it herself, that was. The last thing she'd have needed was for someone who'd known her before to find out she was on the island by her making a fool of herself.

"Drunken karaoke it is," Karen said happily as she made her way down the hall. She turned back a little to face Pam as she pushed the door open to explain.

"I thought you'd wanna get out a little, you know. I remember what it was like when I first showed up." Of course, finding out Jim wasn't her Jim and he'd been married to Pam and expecting a baby wasn't as bad as Pam showing up and finding out she'd been married and had a baby. Well, maybe they were almost equal.

"Well, you definitely thought right," Pam said, raising her eyebrows as she nodded, smile a little wider when Karen turned to her. "I'm supposed to be getting a hut? But I don't know when it'll be done, and..." Trailing off, she bit her lower lip, a touch more serious already. "It's been a rough few days."

That was an understatement, to be sure, but she still wasn't quite sure where she stood with Karen. They may have been friends before, but that wouldn't necessarily mean anything; she'd been married to Jim, and she hadn't so much as caught a glimpse of him since he dropped her off at the crash room. She had now to figure it out, though, she supposed, and any reservation left from their time in Scranton could be pushed aside to appreciate some familiar company, and a distinct lack of awkward stares.

Karen nodded, leading Pam down the stairs and across the path toward the Hub. Thankfully it didn't look like there were too many people there. "Pretty sure rough would be an understatement if I were in your shoes," she said, not unkindly. "I mean...Jim isn't exactly the poster boy for dealing with problems."

That much, Karen knew from experience.

"Yeah," Pam sighed tersely, before she'd really given any thought to what she was agreeing to. Admittedly, both statements struck a chord with her. It'd been more difficult than she liked to let on, finding out everything that she had in the past few days, and Jim's absence, however understandable, didn't help matters much; she'd seen him deal with things the same way before, though, and after the year they'd had, it wasn't much of a surprise. "How, uh - how's he doing? You know, with everything?"

As hard as she tried to sound casual about it, there was no hiding the worry in her voice, even if his avoiding her probably made obvious how he was. Though she knew she couldn't be blamed for it, she couldn't help but feel bad, anyway. The situation wasn't fair for anyone involved.

"Not too good," Karen replied, after thinking it over. Lying about anything right now wasn't going to help Pam or Jim at this point. "But that's not your fault. It's this damn place."

She led Pam over to one of the smaller tables in a quiet corner of the Hub. It was going to be hard not to talk about certain things, and Karen was sure Pam didn't want anyone overhearing their conversation.

It wasn't an unexpected answer, but Pam frowned anyway, resting her head against her hand after taking a seat at the table. Even hearing Karen agree that it wasn't her fault, Pam still felt guilty about the way everything had gone, even that she'd disappeared before. She had no control over it, but the whole situation was almost too messed up to comprehend.

"I just don't get it," she admitted after a pause, her frown only deepening. "How any of this works, or why things like this had to happen. It's just so..." Trailing off, she shrugged. There was no good word to describe it that she could think of, and it wasn't as if she expected Karen to have any answers.

"Crappy," Karen filled in as she opened up the bottle, "horrible, sad, inconceivable, heartbreaking...take your pick."

She held the bottle out to Pam, offering her the first drink. "I made this myself. Well, my friend Paige and I made it. She inherited her brother's still when he disappeared." Taking his wife (Padme, of all people) and kid with him, but Karen kept that to herself.

"All of the above?" Pam offered with a dry laugh and a raised eyebrow, considering the bottle and its story before she reached out to take it. At least she hadn't been the only one. It might have been -- or, admittedly, it probably was -- insensitive, but there was a bizarre sort of comfort in hearing about other people disappearing. When it came to that, she'd much rather have been one of many than the exception to the rule.

Without a word of that, though, she lifted the bottle in a mock toast, then tipped her head back to take a long sip. It was certainly strong, moreso than she'd expected, but she figured if there were ever an occasion to get drunk, it was then. She was in no way in a position to get picky, either. "Not bad," she said, when she'd set the bottle back on the table. "You really made this?"

It was kind of hard to imagine someone who'd worked at Dunder Mifflin for years producing alcohol, but that might've just been her.

"Totally made it," Karen said, sitting up a bit straighter with pride. The moonshine was the one thing Karen could say she helped contribute to the island. Lazing around all day was great, but everyone needed a hobby.

"You should meet Paige, I think you'll like her. She looks like Kirsten Dunst and was part of the X-Men." Though, Paige had known Pam before, including having watched their show. Karen was going to need to smooth a few things out before.

"Kirsten Dunst and part of the X-Man," Pam echoed, her voice flat enough that it wasn't quite a question. It was becoming less startling, though no less strange, to hear about things like that. "I've heard about fictional people, and famous people, but no one yet who was both at the same time." She couldn't help sounding somewhat amused, though, and interested. The island kind of really sucked otherwise, but at least it had something decent going for it. "I'd like that, though. To meet her, I mean. She sounds cool." Especially if there'd be no awkward staring involved.

"Well, we sell this moonshine at the market, so I'll let you know the next time we're at a stall. You can stop by." Karen was pretty sure Paige was past the awkward staring phase.

"Have you met many other people? Like...people who knew you before."
