Yes Folks, after a three month hiatus I have decided to try to revive my LJ with a whopper entry.
SCHOOL
Fall semester was my busiest and most challenging yet. I managed to escape with high marks for which I still thank God daily. I’ve pretty much got all of my general requirements nailed down, so am excited to really get into the meat of my major.
I really love my courses in Journalism and Political Science. Though the more I get into my degree, the more I feel pulled to make different career choices from when I first started. Lately I’ve been thinking that I’d like to work in the journalism field for a few years after getting my degree. At some point I’d like to go to graduate school for either Law or Journalism (ideally, I’d like to learn Media Law). Then I want to teach college students while running some research projects. Academia interests me, and I am reluctant to ever really leave it. It is a place where I have felt comfortable throughout my life. I also think that I’d be good at it. Being an RA this past semester has helped me to learn a lot about myself and how I interact with others. And I think, or at least hope, that with some fine polishing I could be a good educator, who utilizes creativity to teach. I also don’t mind the idea of flexible hours, low-stress summers and the possibility of getting all afternoon classes (hello mornings in bed!)
LONDON
I am so excited to be headed to London in less than 3 weeks. I am also quite a bit nervous. Here is a fun list!
Why I’m Nervous
Never been out of the country for more than two weeks
Never lived in a city that large
Anxious about being thousands of miles away from Sam and Family
What if all my friends forget me
Not sure if I have enough money
What if I hate my internship
What if I never want to come back
Why I’m Excited
I will be there with two of the most wonderful ladies I know
I’ll meet lots of Elon people
I’ll meet lots of random British people
I’ll be living in a city and can have access to anything
I’ll be able to take day trips around England and several long trips to Ireland, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Italy, Greece and Maybe France and Spain. (Africa would be cool too… probably not but we’ll see…)
This is probably my only chance to live abroad
I can drink legally
My trip will have a lasting impact on who I am
Tony Blair will probably resign while I’m there and that will be cool to experience
So there you have it. By the way, I don’t know if I ever officially announced my internship here, but I will be working with the Liberal Democratic Party. They’re the third biggest party in the United Kingdom (behind Labour and Conservatives) It should be cool because the office is in Westminster in this old “historically significant” building. I’ll only be a few hops from Parliament, so hopefully will convince my boss to take me on a field trip!
I’m also working on my blog for London. I plan to have some slideshows as well as “nearly daily” entries (by nearly daily I mean, hopefully three times a week)
THE HOLIDAYS
Had a great time with my family this Christmas and New Years. My brother has crossed over into the age when we can truly hang out and almost be on the same level. I spent a lot of my time hanging out with him and his 12 year old friends. They all thought I was hot, which was kind of embarrassing, but flattering none-the-less. They’re a cool bunch of kids. It makes me jealous that my neighborhoods growing up seemed to be deprived of children - boo hiss!
My parents are doing quite well. My dad was working at a mission church (when they try to start a new church and the diocese pays the bill) which unfortunately had to close because the diocese couldn’t afford it. He is now job searching and has a few interesting leads out. One church is on the beach and has the most beautiful rectory (I’m personally pulling from that one.) Until then he’s working with troubled teenagers with an organization called KidsPeace.
My mom is doing great. She is still loving her church. It’s been a little over two years and she has fully settled into her life in New York. She’s dating a guy who I give high marks too - he’s a Buffalo Sabers fan, but I can look past that. I met his daughter over Christmas and we got a long well. She likes musicals and is a self-proclaimed dork. Pretty much, amazing if you ask me. :D
Our dogs, Benson and Martini are SOOO cute. I’m going to post some pictures on my Facebook soon.
If at first you don’t succeed, skydiving is not for you.
QUESTION OF THE DAY
Assuming you are capable of anything, and all arrows point to yes, what would your dream job be?
My Answer: I would open a restaurant. Fine dining -- but not TOO fine. I would love to help plan menus, decorate the restaurant, deal with the logistical business-end of it, crunch the numbers, advertise and just manage something sucessful (and tasty, of course.)
