If this video was, as I suspect, intended only for the Akatsuki, please note you've broadcasted your intentions to the public at large. Since I have seen you and listened to what you had to say, there's no reason to believe that others, your "enemies" perhaps, have not. Of course, I can't be absolutely certain.
You've stated, and I agree that our top priority is getting home. That you contradicted yourself by endorsing rebellion against "the Gods" responsible for our captivity here concerns me. How is that conducive to our primary goal?
Our enemies pose us no threat at this point, though you are correct that I should be more careful about which channels I utilize.
You should know, however, that the gods of this world have been known to alter the broadcast settings. That may have been what happened in my case just now.
Or perhaps I did not act with sufficient caution.
Regardless, who are you? You are not of these countries.
I . . . saw your dream. The way you spoke in it was foreign to me.
[ L doesn't understand: this man speaks of this place as he would his home, and wishes to escape just the same.
He's a landscape of contradictions.
That he avoids answering the most pertinent of L's questions is perplexing. Is he lying to himself, lying to his followers or lying to L? It could be mere avoidance, he'll wait and see. ]
I am L, and only recently arrived.
Your observation is correct -- this is not the culture into which I was born. Well, I can say I spent my early years in the British Isles, but doubt it'll mean much to you.
[ His voice is soft, in opposition of the underlying insistence of the question he doesn't repeat, allows it to hang between them, for now. ]
[ Well, this changes everything: L dealing with yet another human with delusions of Godhood. L knows him, knows what he looks like. This man lacks discretion and that alone places L at an advantage.
That his power is an unknown fractures the equation: the smoking crater behind the man is testament enough.
A stalemate, for now.
He wants to ask if he is acquainted with the other deities here. Intuition keeps him from asking -- he knows he isn't. ]
A god, you say?
[ sips tea and swallows ] Mmm, well, Kami-sama, for anyone intending to go back to their homes, the fact of their inability to do so would be considered an obstacle.
We've just met. I can't imagine why you'd believe my intentions are less than honorable.
L knows this, as he knows the man's birth name is Nagato. He's aware of the man's devotion to the intriguing Konan and reluctantly, respects Nagato's eye for exquisite taste. Konan is primarily a thinker and yet, exudes a quality of mystery.
Exotic. L can't help but covet her.
Having studied the history of the settlement many times over, viewing dreams, the occasional accidental recording, the dialogue of back and forth, it's been this man, this Pain's voice who has stood out as the catalyst of discord between the two factions.
The idea that Mizukage-sama may influence Pain troubles. L needs to closely monitor their interaction. ]
My name is real.
I am L.
Like you, and any number of people, I answer to many names; however, L is my identity.
Pain-sama.
I play to win and having studied your history many times, I've come to conclude yours is the winning side. And of even more significance, it is ethically correct.

[ L's tone is quiet, serious. ] Thank you, very much.
I'm glad you've asked, as I intend to ask the same of you. I see the hole in the dirt behind you; it's easily extrapolated that it is, in fact, intended as a message to those who have access to the viewing of this video.
As for my own "powers", well, I'm versed in Taijutsu, but -- it's my skill as a strategist that many find invaluable.
Please describe not only your abilities, but how I might serve you, now, with your immediate and future goals.
[ That should satisfy this... Pain, and assist him in insinuating himself into the core of the group. ]

If you are as good with strategy as you claim, then time will reveal as much to me. But first, I will likely need to see some sign that you are as good as your word. You have seen Akatsuki: make ties with Akatsuki and you will ensure good relations with me.
My powers . . . ah. In this world, I have lost a portion of what should be mine, but the culmination of my powers is still such that few individuals could stand before me . . . and few villages, as well. Is there some specific power you are curious about?
Be aware: A good ninja does not simply go around revealing all his secrets.

I understand, and in fact, am staying in the Kirigakure as we speak. My first true contact in this world was Kisame-san -- a fine man who offered to help me in a time of great need

Yes, we will.
[ For an irrational moment, L wishes he had Light with him to guide him through this Gordian knot of social niceties. Of course, the thought is extremely irrational, given that Light can't be trusted, yet, if,
if Light were here with him, then L would feel significantly less pressured to return to home right away, this instant.
L must concentrate on the "God" before him, for now. ]
It seems time is on our side, Pain-sama. I'm certain I won't disappoint and equally certain that you will not.
[ An almost whisper. ] Good day. [ He offers as polite a dismissal as possible, and L really must learn to allow another to have the final word. ]

And who are you?
Reply
I am the God of Amegakure no Sato.
My disempowered condition in this world means nothing. It is a mere obstacle to overcome.
I do not know where these "British Isles" are. It would seem this world connects a number of alternate realities.
As someone who can see planes beyond typical human existence, this is unsurprising to me.
Is it your intention to be friend or foe?
If you intend to attempt to kill me, then it will not be met well.

I see.

I did not say that your intentions were less than honourable.
I said that if they are, then I will not be pleased.
We've just met, but enough strangers in this world have attempted to begin conflicts with me over matters that were of no concern to them.
If you intentions toward me are not violent, then we will have no cause for strife.
If, on the other hand, you bring strife to me, I will meet you with the same.
I do not mask these aspects of myself, L -- as you call yourself.
Though that is not a real name, is it, L?
Pain is my name.
It is not what I was given at birth, either.

[ But he is not yet certain that he trusts this L. The man is a mystery, and Pain is wary of complete strangers.
One must be wary, after having to defend one's coutry as he has done for so many years. ]
If Kisame comes to count you as a comrade, then I shall as well.
But not until such time as I know you better.
I consider myself an agreeable person. Perhaps we will have no cause for quarrels. We shall see.
