Character: Death
Series: The Sandman
Version: The Sandman version before Morpheus' death
Age: unknown
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Not really applicable, but I'll say Bisexual
Appearance: Death appears as a teenage girl with dark hair and eyes as well as an all-black attire. She wears a black camisole on top of black pants and boots with a metal studded belt encircling her waist. She completes the look with her unkempt shoulder-length hair. The irony lies in how she wears a silver ankh symbol, the symbol of life, around her neck as well as having the Eye of Horus symbol, which symbolizes rebirth, painted on her eyes. She is attractive as she was meant to be like the Angel of Death in a tale in Caballa who is so beautiful that those who see her will have their souls sucked out through their eyes in bliss. Death, however, is not attracted to grandeur and mythological beauty, preferring to take the form of a reasonably attractive, goth-looking yet perky girl.
Personality: A paradox to her role, Death is a spunky, down-to-earth and caring figure. She is also the most friendly among her siblings when communicating or bargaining with mortals. While she does not appear intimidating at all, she is very level-headed and wise even though she often hides her wisdom under the coat of casual words. She feels neither guilty nor delighted about taking people's lives. Instead, she tries to be the figure that people would want to meet at the end, someone who really cares. Death is easy-going and she never appears very sad nor very happy. She also seems to take no sides in any matter, prefering to let things go the way they should instead as can be seen from what she says to a person contemplating suicide who asked her why she is not stopping him, "It doesn't matter, you get what anyone else gets; you get a lifetime." She has a very careful approach to her job, not wanting to mess up yet not being too fastidious about it either. She is the most psychologically stable in her family and she has the healthiest sense of humor as well. Despite the way she dresses, she is not goth and she would simply say that she likes black when asked about her choice of clothes.
Abilities/Weaponry: Despite her name, Death has omnipotence over the aspect of both life and death. She has the power to take the life of a person but she has neither authority to do so nor the authority to interfere in the matter of anyone's coming to life and going to death. She merely watches and guides the soul once the person has died and those just coming to life. Death can, however, slack off and give a dying person a few more time to live even though it is very rare and would probably 'cause her to be scolded by her older sibling. She can teleport, accompanied by the strange sound of many birds fluttering away.
Weaknesses: Death is immortal but she can be destroyed. She also has neither the authority to cut a person's life short nor to give life back to those who have died. Her role is simply to be a guide to those beginning life or beginning death.
History: As an Endless, beings who represent the concepts they are named after, Death's origin dates back to the first living being that ever existed and she will continue to exist until she can finally guide the last of living beings over to her realm. As can be gathered from this quote by her:
"When the first living thing existed, I was there waiting.
When the last living thing dies, my job will be finished.
I'll put the chairs on the tables, turn out the lights, and lock the universe behind me as I leave."
Other than just being a reaper who meets people when they die, Death meets them when they are born as well even though only she remembers the meeting. Once every century, she is obligated to go to the mortal world as a mortal for 24 hours so that she may understand the bittersweet taste of life and death that she controls. Her siblings consist of the other Endless; Destiny, Dream, Destruction, Desire, Despair and Delirium. Destruction has disappeared from his realm and abandoned his duties for about three centuries, but he is strong and is able to take care of himself. When Delirium, the youngest of them, suddenly disappears from her realm, however, Death thinks that perhaps she should go look for her delirious little sister as the youngest of the Endless does have a knack for getting extremely lost. She tries to find Delirium by teleporting herself to where Del should be, but she finds herself suddenly staring up at strange tall gates instead, wondering where exactly she has landed herself at...
