The press conference had been played on the big screen back at CTU...it had made Chase's workday a little easier, reminded him exactly why he had voted for Palmer in 2004.

He's certainly not expecting to run into Palmer in the bar on his way home from work, but after a few moments of nervousness, he decides to make the most of it.

"Mr. President?"

"Mr. Edmunds," he gives a tired smile and decides it would only one drink tonight or else he'll fall asleep right in this chair. "How are you?"

"I'm, ah..." Chase tries to comport himself with a bit more dignity and not shove his hands awkwardly into his pockets. "I'm good, thanks."

He glances up to look David in the eye.

"Mr. President--I have to tell you how much I appreciated your address."

"The Seattle one?" Despite many people saying it had been a mistake, there were still a few who thought otherwise. Though it wouldn't have changed his mind if no one had agreed, it was still good to hear.

"Thank you. I'm afraid you might be in the minority, however. Do you care to join me," he adds, motioning to the chair across from him.

"Thanks." Chase takes the seat.

If Jack can manage not to fanboy James Bond and the Lord of the Rings pups, Chase can keep himself from being too effusive over his political idol.

"I know. I mean, it's unfortunate. The sentiment at CTU, though, for the most part...I think most of my colleagues agree with you."

He'd like to think so, anyway. They should all know better.

"Remind them all to vote in November," he murmurs dyly, taking a sip of his drink. Then in a more serious tone, he adds, "It does seem that most of the intelligence community thinks the camps pose more of a risk than a benefit."

It was only the politicians who thought otherwise.

Chase sighs. "I guess all we can do is work harder to find the source of the attacks, sir."

He winces. He hadn't meant to sound so hopeless about Palmer's chances of swaying public opinion.

"I mean--"

And here David thinks he might have sounded pessimistic about their ability to do so.

"No, I--" A pause when he realizes they're talking over each other. Then, "I know CTU is doing everything it can to find the people responsible. The fight's different this time."

This wasn't a centralized plot, with one target and a few high-profile perpetrators. It was a day-to-day battle all over the country, with enemies hiding in plain sight.
