He stayed at least five paces behind her from when they left customs to when she stepped onto the platform to catch a cab into the city. Arthur stepped onto the curb beside her, their sleeves brushing as they did, and set down his suitcase. It startled her. She had expected him to keep his distance as the whole team had done, but here he was smiling at her gently.
“Want to share a cab into the city?” Ariadne asked.
“Where are you going?”
She shrugged. It wasn’t as if she had really had time to make plans about where to go from here. The job was done and the rest of her life was in front of her. Where she went tonight seemed of little consequence. Besides, the taxi driver could recommend somewhere nice.
“Then come with me.”
“Where are you going?”
“No idea,” he said with another smile.
The one Arthur finally flagged down was not a usual taxi, but a town car, the type that businessmen used.
“Can you afford this?”
“With what Saito just paid us, we could rent a limousine.”
Her body still sung with the electricity of getting away. She had done something no one else she knew had ever done--except for the rest of the team.
