We had our Ward Halloween party on Friday, which happened to coincide with Eliza's ward Temple night. She asked if I would babysit Ruby; I said yes, but only if she could come with me to my Halloween party.
Can I just say I've never been so popular?
There were also strange looks, which I interpreted as, "Are you the token Single Mom?" but mostly I had girls fawning over Ruby. At one point Kevin walked up to me and said, "You've been standing here for thirty seconds and have a swarm of girls. If she wakes up, can I hold her and walk around? I want a swarm of girls."
That baby is just so cute! I love being an auntie.
In cooking news (yes! I actually have cooking news!), I made a few things this week. Well, "few" here meaning "two plus friend Kjersten made one under my 'supervision' so it's like I did it." For Break the Fast this month we had a soup theme. Natacia and Cute John (as opposed to Last Night John (not as scandalous as it sounds) or Brother John or Jon Forsyth) had an unofficial competition going on between their broccoli soups. I was determined to like Natacia's better (sisterly loyalty, and I just wanted Cute John to lose), but Cute John once again proved his worth as a cook and made a broccoli soup so fantastic that I asked for the recipe. Yes, that's right, I asked for a recipe! Unfortunately for me, he's one of those people who makes things up as he cooks, so the recipe doesn't have step-by-step instructions (step one: take broccoli out of fridge. Step 2: set it on the counter. Step 3: retrieve sharp knife and cut into manageable pieces, doing away with the stalks. Step four: BOIL WITH BOUILLON) which meant I had to wing it a time or two, resulting in some stressful kitchen times.
And yeah, you read that correctly: I then made the soup for which I had obtained a recipe. It was good, too, although not as good as his. Don't know what the difference was; he probably has Magic Mojo Cooking Skills that I will never achieve due to lack of interest and refusal to cook on a regular basis. Still, I was told by my visiting teachers and my little brother that the soup was good, so I'll stick with that.
Today I made Magic Chicken for dinner (a delicious crockpot meal involving chicken, cream cheese, dry Italian dressing packets, and cream of chicken soup) and so I could have food to eat all week long for lunch (as it turns out, I'm a bit of a fan of eating during the school day). I like crockpot meals because I can stuff the ingredients in a pot and forget about it until dinner time. I don't like crockpot meals because then I have to plan time into my morning routines to stuff said ingredients into a pot I can then forget about. It turned out delicious, but that's not really surprising since it's hard to mess up.
I won't tell you about the pumpkin muffins because I didn't really make them, but they didn't turn out the way they were supposed to, so it has been officially declared that only Johanna can make pumpkin muffins because the rest of us just screw them up.
This has been Cooking Time with Amy.
Other newsworthy news is Johanna told me that some boy was staring at me today during choir. I told her of course he was; I'm the director. He's supposed to look at me. She insisted that no, he was looking at me. Um, good for him? I was a bit too preoccupied playing the piano (my pianist failed to show. Again) to notice, although to be perfectly honest, I wouldn't have noticed anyway. As has been previously stated, I'm a bit obtuse when it comes to such things.
Being the ward music leader continues to be stressful because I am required to have a special musical number EVERY WEEK in Church. I almost feel sorry for all the musically inclined people in the ward, because I keep hunting them down and demanding (you know, politely) that they share their talents with the whole ward.
OH! OH! This has nothing to do with the last paragraph, but I just remembered: I performed a bit of sewing today! I discovered a monster hole on Friday in my brand new sweater, so today I sat down with thread and needle and patched it up. Huzzah! I'm practically domestic--cooking AND sewing in one day! It's something of a miracle!
And that's the happy note on which I end.
