Just went to the graduation service for my kids. The best part?
The black Baptist preacher, visiting the Catholic church, announces for the last song: "We are going to sing a song that I learned half an hour ago, in a language I don't speak... si se puede."
The priest, apparently a man of many talents, went and played the song through once, and we sang it a few times, at first hesistantly, then rather triumphant, the preacher's strong voice carrying the tune, the Spanish-speaking congregation's words carrying through when he faltered.
And then we waited. No one moved. Someone whispered "las velas" and the preacher said "Hey, the candles, I know that one!"
There was consultation, and he said "The graduates are invited to blow out their candles."
Again we waited. He said "Go in peace."
Again we waited. Someone whispered "Victor!" urgently and he led the seniors out to much applause.
See, the spirit moves in Catholic churches too. It's just a little rusty.
