I am so touched.
I came upstairs today to find a "you have a package" message stuck to my laptop. Kat had taken it off our mailbox and kindly placed it on my desk. Long story short, I just went down to retrieve it due to laziness and one attempt that was thwarted by a cheerful "Back Soon!" message on the locked door to the front desk.
I opened it expecting Easter-and-Passover-in-a-Box from Mom. Instead, I found a small box, wrapped in birthday paper, with a card taped to the front. Since I have no self-control when it comes to these things, I opened both. The front of the card has a photo from the knees down of a little girl wearing a gingham skirt and purple glittered shoes. If it weren't for the color of the shoes, I'd swear it was a still from The Wizard of Oz, one of my favorite movies from when I was a kid. "I get to because it's my birthday," says the message underneath the photo.
On the inside: "Make this your motto." Underneath, a handwritten note: "You tell 'em! Congratulations on this auspicious milestone. Here's to many more. Love, Aunt Barb."
Yay! Aunt Barb! She of the funness and the coolness and the all-around awesome aunt-atude. After shaking and feeling the package, trying to determine what is inside (I guessed a book), I finally open it. A photo frame. Okay, neat. One can never have too few photo frames, says I. And the box says that it has a Celtic design. I like Celtic things. I can get on board with that. I open the box and peel away the tissue paper.
There, in the frame, is a small charcoal 3/4 profile of...me. "Linds - Happy 21st! Love, Aunt Barb" She did this. I now own my very own Barb Walter original.
I don't know if she based it off a photo of me or if that's what I look like in her memories. I just know that I am extremely touched.
birthday,
love
