When you are young
no one tells you that when you grow up
it will be harder to believe
in God,
that you will have to stop eating
so much junk food,
that the boy you love as a young girl
will become a man
you do not know,
and that you will become
a woman that
your teenage self
wouldn't recognize.
One day
that girl you call your best friend
will call you for the last time.
No one tells you
most of us will turn out to be
receptionists or retail clerks
instead of
rock stars.
Your dreams of becoming an author
will dissipate into something
practical.
That degree you paid so dearly for
with money, time, and tears,
will get you an extra
fifty cents an hour,
maybe.
No one tells you
it will turn out completely different than planned,
yet it will still be
beautiful.
