CANON BASICS
In an alternate end to the nineteenth century, Exorcists are soldiers for the Black Order who use a special weapon called Innocence to destroy Akuma. The Akuma (translates to "demon") are machines powered by the souls of the dead that were called back from beyond by their grieving loved ones, who were tricked into doing so by the Millennium Earl.

The Millennium Earl is a scary man who controls the Akuma and wishes for the end of humanity. His family are the Noah, who are humans whose Noah genes awoke and so they were possessed by a Memory of Noah and given special powers. The Exorcists fight the Noah as well, etc. etc.

CONTEXT
Being from about the 1890s as well as locked inside an underground lab for most of his life, Alma really didn't get to experience the time period very much. Plus, for some reason the D.Gray-Man scientists are super advanced tech-wise anyway. :|a They combine tech with magic and spells to create 'futuristic' devices, such as flying bat-golems able to be used like walkie talkies with video, as well as complicated robots able to think on their own.

APPEARANCE [normal appearance]
Alma is kind of Asian-looking, with dark, short hair, rounded features, and angular eyes. However he's rather obviously not completely Asian with his large eyes and oversized eyebrows. His hair is usually kept short with fringe and side bits that frame his face while the rest is very short and scruffy.

Although at first glance, he might appear very human, there's rather obvious differences. For one, many of his joints (ex. ankles, wrists, knees) look like doll-joints. His skin appear more rigid and fake looking in certain places and generally has a sickened/pale tone to it. He has large protrusions from his shoulders and black markings patterned all over him, including a large triangle on his stomach, tribal-like markings on his biceps, and a hand/claw marking over his 'heart'. Alma also has a prehensile, demonic-looking tail and a glowing halo-like ring floating above his head.

WHAT IS HE?
He's an experiment, called a Second Exorcist, where scientists took a dead/dying human and transferred their brain/soul to an artificial body. However, after the failure of Second Exorcists, Alma was further experimented on and injected with Dark Matter (what makes Akuma) which proved to be a bad idea. When he awoke, his hatred combined with the Dark Matter and made him into an Akuma hybrid.

So basically, he breaths, he bleeds, and he can die, but he looks like a doll and is powered by the sorrow/hatred/agony in his soul. Being a Second Exorcist gives him healing powers (which he has mostly worn out, so they don't work very well anymore) and being an Akuma gives him the power to blast energy from his mouth and hands.

ISN'T 'HE' A 'SHE'?
Alma originally (before dying and becoming a Second Exorcist) was a woman. However, he grew up not knowing this and developed his own identity as a male before he was able to recall his past life. Yes, this creates some grey area with his gender identity, but his physical sex is still male and he'll continue to assume that's what he should call himself in the Fishbowl. This may change later on, depending on what happens in Edensphere, but for right now he doesn't understand gender identities enough to think too much about it.
